INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGY
‘The Final Word’
Step 1: All group members come to class prepared by having completed the assigned activity (i.e. reading, research, note-taking, highlight important passages, concepts, or principles, etc.).
Step 2: Teacher identifies the topic to be discussed but does not comment on it.
Step 3: Groups designate a starting person. This student then responds to the
assigned topic.
Step 4: In round-robin order, other group members comment about the selected topic (without cross-talk).
Step 5: The originating person then gets…”the final word”. He or she can either emphasize point already mentioned by a group member by agreeing/disagreeing, share something new or provide a different perspective.
Step 6: Rotating the individual who begins, repeat steps 3-5 until each person in the group has shared a unique ‘take away’ from the assigned reading. (optional)
Step 7: Repeat the activity for the next assigned article.
