TDSB SCHOOL
Jessies Centre has an on site school that offers the young woman a chance to obtain their high school diploma. They have their own TDSB Principal, School Teacher who support the woman's individual academic and personal needs with flexibility. The school is open to the clients Monday - Thursday and provides the woman with free on-site childcare as they are enrolled in the school program.
This program helps these women develop and build onto their Social Determinants of health. This course specifically being about education therefore it supports #2- Education and will transfer the skills into #4- Employment.
When a individual obtains their high school diploma they will have success in building their community capacity by joining the workforce and being able to pay it forward in helping others. They are able to support themselves and become a positive role model for their children, which in turn can end up being a positive reflection for their children.
Drop in Programs
Jessie's Centre offers their clients an opportunity to drop in to their childcare center and spend time with other mothers and their children. This offers the woman a chance to collaborate and get to know other young moms and build relationships. The children also benefit from these programs because they too can meet other children, play and build peer relationships. Relationships between mothers and children all support a social opportunities that support mental health.
This program helps these women develop and build onto their Social Determinants of health. These drop in programs allow for these women to meet other women so it supports them build onto #9 Social Safety Net. Having other peers to connect with when in need, or just to keep in touch also supports these women's mental health and well being.
Drop in programs builds on community capacity because it opens doors for relationship building which can provide peer support for woman experiencing challenging and difficult times in their life.
Housing Connections
Jessie's Centre offers clients and their children a safe place to call home. Jessie's Centre has 16 total apartment units that the woman can reside in until they have obtained something more permanent. The woman are assisted with making the connections and applications to more suitable and sustainable housing in effort for longer lasting more permanent housing for their family. When an individual has safe, permanent housing they house a more attainable chance in overall future success.
This program helps these women develop and build onto their Social Determinants of health. This is a program geared to housing supports so it directly addresses #07- Housing. When a person is able to secure safe and affordable housing their success possibilities are endless.
Housing can build on community capacity because when a woman gains herself stable, safe housing, she will be better equipped to provide for herself and her family without fear or concern as to where she will live.
Jessie's Centre clients can attend free drop in programs that offer free prepared meals as scheduled on the monthly calendars. These free meal programs allow for mothers to bring their children. These programs not only provide a woman a nutritious, delicious meal, but also provides the mother a chance to see and experience healthy eating habits that supports their overall health for themselves, that they can also teach their children. During these meal times, women can socialize and get to know other woman as well that will help to build their network of peers that are in and have similar interests.
This program helps these women develop and build onto their Social Determinants of health. This program supports #6- Food security. As mentioned above they are offered a free meal and are taught skills in order to maintain healthy eating.
Meal programs support community capacity building because it supports a crucial important necessity of life for all. Food can sometimes be limited for some, no one should have to endure hunger, or a lack of food security.

Jessies Centre offers young woman free health care onsite and referrals to off site practitioners. Depending on the woman's needs, medical attention is designed to support the individual. There is a doctor on site that visits clients once per week. The Doctor also offers free medical services to all children who are the children of the clients. These services range from pre- pregnancy care such as pregnancy tests, pre-natal care, and post-natal care. Referral's are commonly made for the clients to offer a more sustainable medical professional connection that is more permanent and longer lasting. The doctor also supports infant care, and children may also receive medical check ups if needed. There is also support from volunteers such as labour coaches and volunteers to go with a client out in the general community to access additional health supports or connections.
This program helps these women develop and build onto their Social Determinants of health. These health services are designed to increase these women's #10- Health services to be easily accessed and utilized. When a mother is healthy, chances are so is the child. This service is also offered to the children so it is also related to #5 Early Childhood Development, where the child is being monitored for healthy developments.
Health services supports community capacity because everyone deserves the right to medical care regardless of their situation. When a mother and child receive care, they will be healthy to become successful in their life, which in turn can prove to be beneficial to the family all around.
