With the guidance of their teachers, students will create a Bilingual Portfolio. The Bilingual Portfolio will be a combination of evidence that proves that the student is bilingual and biliterate, and that the student can use their knowledge of both languages to serve their community.
Demonstration of active use of Spanish and English:
· One on one reading assessment: reading assessment with a teacher, in English and in Spanish.
· Documentation of active use of two languages: students use English and Spanish (e.g., serving as a bilingual ambassador for visitors to the school, reading books to students in lower grades, doing bilingual presentations for other grades, etc.).
Before the end of the academic year, students will submit their portfolio.Teachers at MMUUSD will review all the portfolios and suggest modifications or extra activities to ensure students meet the requirements. Students will have 2 months to submit their amendments.
Before the end of 4th grade, teachers at MMUUSD will make their final decision and recommend students who have met the requirements to receive the Elementary School Biliteracy Attainment Award.
At the end of 4th grade, Spanish Immersion schools will hold an event to give students their Elementary School Biliteracy Attainment Award.
