This piece (above) is based on the Master of Catherine of Cleves - Mouth of Hell (c. 1440 CE).
I have always found this pieced to be very interesting and wanted to recreate it. After the lockdowns of 2020, I decided to finally give it a try. This piece was always meant to be something just for me, therefore I decided to give it my own special touch; wolf heads instead of the heads used in the original (see image to right).
The original was created on vellum, measured 192 x 130 mm (approximately 7.5 inches high x 5.125 inches wide) with 105 x 62 mm (4.125 inches high x 2.5 inches wide) of the page utilized by the art.
My version was done on 100 lb smooth surface Briston paper using Winsor & Newton Designers Gouache and covers 170 x 110 mm (approximately 6.625 inches x 4.25 inches) of the page, slightly more than the original.
Mouth of Hell - Original, c. 1440 CE
This piece (left) was created on parchment. I had just received a gift of many period pigments and wanted to try them out. I used an egg white binder for the first time (c, 2018-19).
The exemplar used is from "The Book of Kells."
