Marriage and the Earnings of Female Managers: Evidence from South Korean
Abstract: This paper examines if marriage influences earnings of women managers in South Korea by utilizing the Korean Women Manager Panel (KWMP) data, a longitudinal dataset of women managers. To address endogeneity concerns, I employ an instrumental variable approach by using the proportion of births among women aged 30–34 when the respondent was age 25 as an instrument for marriage. Interestingly, I find a positive and statistically significant marriage premium among female managers. Complementary analyses using large-scale data further show that marriage effects vary by career stage, with positive effects emerging only among women with strong labor market attachment.
