Yes, I’m THAT teacher! That teacher who believes math should be fun and hands-on! No matter where my students are — whether they’re working below grade level or soaring above — it’s amazing to see how much they grow through games. When they’re playing, they’re laughing, thinking, strategizing… and learning without even realizing it!
Student Favorite! Capture the Math is a favorite in my first-grade classroom. This engaging game not only reinforces fluency across a variety of math skills, but it also promotes good sportsmanship, teamwork, and social development—making learning both effective and enjoyable.
How to Play: Up to 5 players can play at once. Choose one player to be the Card Caller (the student who lays down the square cards). The Card Caller flips over the top square card and places it face up for everyone to see. All other players race to find the matching circle card! Example: The circle 2 card matches the square 1 + 1 card. The first player to find and capture the matching card keeps that pair and wins the round. The Card Caller continues laying down cards until the deck is gone. When all cards have been played, the player with the most matches wins!
