Opinion Writing Building Blocks
Block 1 (Week 1): Understanding Opinion Writing - Students are introduced to opinion writing and its key components. Instruction focuses on helping students understand that opinion writing expresses what someone thinks or feels about a topic and includes reasons to support that opinion. This block builds a strong foundation by clearly defining the purpose and structure of opinion writing and helping students distinguish between opinion and fact.
Block 2 (Week 2): Planning with an Idea Web & Writing a Strong Opening - Students learn how to plan their writing by selecting an opinion topic and organizing two supporting reasons using an idea web. With this plan in place, students are guided through writing a strong and effective opening sentence that clearly states their opinion.
Block 3 (Week 3): Developing the Middle - Students focus on writing the middle of an opinion piece. Using a provided idea web and opening, they learn how to expand on their reasons and connect ideas using transition words such as first, next, also, in addition, finally, and last.
Block 4 (Week 4): Crafting a Strong Closing - Students learn how to write an effective closing sentence using a given idea web, opening, and middle. Instruction emphasizes ending the piece by restating the opinion in a new way and bringing the writing to a clear and complete conclusion.
Block 5 (Weeks 5–8): Writing Full Opinion Pieces - Students apply all opinion-writing skills by completing one full opinion piece each week. For each piece, students will:
Complete a story plan (Monday)
Write a rough draft (Tuesday)
Participate in 1-on-1 editing conferences with the teacher (Wednesday)
Revise and publish a final draft with an illustration (Thursday & Friday)
This block emphasizes the complete writing process and helps students strengthen organization, detail, and clarity while building confidence as independent opinion writers.
