Civically Engaged Scholars is a degree distinction seeking program, designed to encourage students to get involved with their local community members through a critically conscious lens. Students get the chance to learn in the classroom the importance of getting involved and then have opportunity to practice what they learned with one of our many local community partners.
Civically Engaged Scholar Requirements
The opportunity to participate in Service Learning is particularly valuable to me as a student in an interpreting program. Interpreters need to be bilingually and bi-culturally competent. Like any student of ASL, I can expect greater learning outcomes for both the language and culture through interaction with Deaf signers in the community. I can demonstrate my desire for greater competency by seeking greater connection with the Deaf Community, and Service Learning is an opportunity for me to do that. In addition to this, Service Learning is an opportunity to make connections that will last well beyond my schooling and into my interpreting career. This means that the required hours/semester are just a beginning. I am not going to be done volunteering, socializing, or helping with events in the community just because I graduate.
