Benefits and Potential Risks to Psychotherapy:
A wide range of people can benefit from the experiences of psychotherapy; however, it is important to understand that it carries the potential of both benefits and risks. Everyone experiences therapy differently.
Benefits: Therapy today is well-researched, and evidence-based treatments with professional therapists can promote many positive changes in your life especially if you are struggling with feelings of depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship challenges and other life struggles. Trust and safety between client and therapist is key to healing, and during this process you may be asked to try different ways to help express your feelings, including art, journal writing, weekly homework, meditation, talking, movement, or bringing in family members. Sometimes this involves working with your doctor to find a medication to decrease depression or anxiety symptoms.
Potential risks: Exploring past or current challenges may evoke strong feelings, and you may feel worse (anger, grief, sadness, confusion, etc.) before you feel better. Noticing your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors allows time for reflection and change which may impact lives and relationships in various ways. Fluctuations in feelings are a normal part of this process when exploring past or current challenges and requires patience, vulnerability and trust in the process. It is important to consider carefully whether these risks are worth the benefits to you, and to share any questions, feedback or concerns with your therapist.
