This psychologist studied on why lower class students develop slower than other students. He also goes past that, with explaining how we as educators shouldn't "baby" the child.
1) As a student of a lower class, and who's parents may not have enough time in the day to help their kids with their homework. These parents are more concerned with getting food in the child's stomach. With this in mind, no matter how smart this kid is, they are automatically behind because of the lack of support in the home.
2) As a teacher, we need to always be that positive example in a child's life. So, you may not have control of what they have at home, but you do have control of the self- view of the child in the classroom. When you get the chance, let them now how well they can succeed in life.
3) Big praise can backfire a lot in the classroom with these low self- view children. It can cause them to overwhelm themselves with the need to always do great. Instead of great praise, we could try just letting them know to get back up when they fail, and alwasy providing that supportive backup that they may not have at home.
This blog was incredibly interesting to read because I have often asked myself as a future educator how to meet students at their level in the best way. This article spoke about how best to help student's and support them so that in the future, they know they can succed, but they also know that if they fail, they can get back up.
Dr. Lisa Henshaw, current lead researcher among a team of faculty and doctoral students investigating secondary and shared trauma among MSW students related to COVID-19 and their field placements, makes her presentation about how to address teaching in a supportive way with trauma. Her main tactic to achieve this was to define trauma, and explain triggers in the classroom. She suggests that the teacher should be careful with his/her body language, and get the child to communicate feelings.
1) I learned how to relate, reason, and regulate. Which means to relate and connect with children, use reasoning and teach the child tactics to help deal with trauma triggers, lastly, remind the child often that they are safe and don't overwhelm them.
2) I learned that breathing techniques really help in keeping kids calm, and we should always try to incorporate them in the classroom.
3) I learned to depersonalize student behavior; Just because a student acts badly, doesn't mean he/she is a bad student.
I plan on using lots of breathing techniques in my classroom, along with using body language and communication to indicate that a child is safe in my classroom.
In this episode, Martine, the author, speaks about how to use time blocking, and some advantages of time blocking. She not only uses it for work, but she uses it every single day.
1) I learned that time blocking can be used either online or on paper, but they are really helpful to establish a routine
2) I learned that I can use this to create a color- coded, organized calender. I can also make this into certain times, and make sure I can create good time management skills.
3) I also learned that when I do time-block, don't be scared to schedule time longer than you truly think it will take so you have a second to breathe. You also need to test your schedule to make sure it actually is usable.
I do think time-blocking and time managment skills are extremely important, and I plan on learning more about google calender to help organize life. I do think teachers need to be careful in how they schedule their time, and make sure they have time to breathe.
In this video, a group of educators from the same school explain how they make students feel welcomed and important throughout the school day. Every single day of the school week, each student is assigned with a check in/out buddy, and they meet with this buddy when they come in to school and when they come out.
1) Each morning they have a two minute session to check-in, and I really like the things they do in those two minutes. They set goals for the day, and have someone to communicate their feelings to.
2) I learned that even the small things play such a huge role in these kids lives. In order to make these kids feel comfortable in a place of learning, the teachers support them in many ways
3) I learned that when these have someone to talk to in the morning and evening before they leave, they are more likely to build a special relationship with their teacher. Which not only helps them to learn better, but also makes them feel more comfortblae in talking to their teacher when they are struggling with personal or educational things.
I plan on learning so may ways to make my students comfortable in the classroom. Especially around the age of Elementary students, they need someone to recognize when they're not acting like themselves, and recognize a problem before they leave your classroom.
There are so many reason to use twitter as an educator. I really like how encouraging the community is, and really helpful it is as a teacher.
1) In the classroom, you can use twitter in many ways. One way you could use twitter in the classroom is getting advise from other educators, and seeing how they taught something different at times.
2) Also, as a teacher you could use a place to just let out some emotions, and talk with people who are going through the same thing as you. You can discuss how another teacher handled a certain situation, and you can get feedback on certain situations you may not know what to do.
3) Twitter is also a great place to learn of some new resources in technology, among other things to help further your classroom.
I can use Twitter to further my personal learning network by talking and strategizing with other educators, and discussing how to handle other situations.
Youtube is a great network to use in the educational field. You can use this to show videos, and other visual tools to help your students learn.
1) One way you can use Youtube in the classroom is to be able to support different type of learners in your classroom. For the visual learners you can show videos, or maybe play a catchy song to memorize certain concepts.
2) It is a great way to make learning fun for students, and help the teacher get down down on their level to meet them where they are at. Help them learn in a way that keeps their attention
3) Another way to use Youtube in the classroom is to watch educational videos created by other educators. A teacher can learn about new tool, and different strategies to manage thier classroom.
Youtube is a great way to improve your PLN, it's great to be able to watch other educators online and see how they may teach differently for each student.
