Writing Workshops and Coaching

I also offer one-to-one coaching (over video call) to help you improve the structure, style, or argument of your writing.

I offer group writing workshops on academic and creative non-fiction writing.

Some past workshops:

Creative Writing for the Environmental Humanities at the Rachel Carson Center Landhaus (Herrmannsdorf, Germany), September 2023.

During this two-day workshop, participants thought critically about what it means to write “creatively,” learnt how to identify and emulate techniques used by successful writers, and engaged in various writing exercises designed to invigorate their own writing practice.

Feedback from participants:
"In the beginning I didn’t expect that I might be able to use the texts from the writing exercises directly for my thesis, but looking at the outcome, I think I can."
"Really enjoyed the convivial working atmosphere and whole setup of the workshop. Going from close reading to the overall structure of a text made total sense to me. The workshop gave me loads of food for thought about my own writing style and how I want to convey my message. Interesting perspectives on writing I have never thought of."

Reworkshop: A Two-Day Writing Lab at the Rachel Carson Center (Munich, Germany), January 2024.

During this two-day workshop, participants were guided to think deeply about the elements that constitute an engaging academic text—the opening and ending, a clear argument, a logical and compelling structure, and beautiful style—and had the opportunity to apply these insights to a work in progress. The workshop also provided the space for participants to discuss their draft with me and the group, so that each could benefit from collaborative feedback on any writing or editing issues they were facing.

Feedback from participants:
The whole workshop was thoughtfully planned and carried out. I enjoyed warming up exercises, which forced me to think about my writing in a different perspective. Rowan's feedback, group discussions and tandem work were all great.”
“The workshop struck the perfect balance between silent writing, group discussion, and partnered discussion. I also thought that the overall workload for each day was well designed. Sometimes one feels so tired at the end of workshops, with this one I was also tired but not too much. Well done and thank you!!”
