Hello

I'm Rowan: writer, speaker, science communicator, copyeditor, recovering academic, writing coach, yoga teacher, climber, DJ... I've had a varied career but I've always been passionate about clear, engaging communication.

If you would like me to help your writing reach its full potential, click here for more info on the freelance editing or coaching services I offer.

You can read some of my academic or public-facing writing here.

I also love doing voice work, and have narrated, hosted, and produced various podcasts and long-form audio pieces, including Shakespeare for All and EcoCast. Find out more on my audio page.

I worked as a Writer and Editor on the Anthropocene Curriculum project at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) in Berlin during 2022.

Previously, I was a Researcher in Residence at the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society (2020-21) and a postdoctoral research fellow at the Harvard University Center for the Environment (2018-20). I completed my PhD at the University of Sussex (UK) in 2017. My academic research lies at the intersection of literary studies and the environmental humanities, and is concerned with how ecological crises such as climate change and biodiversity loss are transforming our understanding of the world and our place within it.

I have previously published under the name "Jemma", but now go by Rowan.

Where I'm at

I was born in Aschaffenburg, Germany and lived there for three years before moving to England. I grew up in Kent, and then lived in Brighton from 2008-2018.

I now live in Berlin.

You can find me at the nearest cold body of water.
