Preparing for the State Assembly involved extensive research and collaboration. Members of my delegation had to identify important issues that affect Florida
State Assembly was an engaging event where I met teens from across the state who came together to participate in a simulated legislative session. During the assembly, I joined the Senate (Legislative branch) while everyone assumed the roles and debated and voted on bills they had authored. It was an immersive experience that provided a firsthand look at the legislative process and helps develop essential skills in public speaking, critical thinking, and collaboration.
The preparation process included analyzing existing laws, consulting with mentors and our advisors, and refining proposals with peers. We also engaged in practice debates to hone in on our argumentation skills and receive feedback so it has a better likelihood of being passed.
Participating in the YMCA State Assembly provided me with a new perspective. It gave me a valuable networking opportunity to connect with other high-achieving teens and youth. I was able to interact with peers from different backgrounds, build relationships with mentors and advisors. The platform that youth in government has built prepares us for the future and unifies teens in an extensive but necessary process. So many ideas and mindsets blended during this years state assembly.
Civic engagement is crucial for a healthy and prosperous democracy, as it empowers individuals and the youth to actively participate in the decision-making processes that affect their lives. Because of programs like the YMCA State Assembly, I and many others were able to gain a deeper understanding of their civic responsibilities and the importance of passing a bill.
At the local level, Youth in Government chapters are supposed to hold regular meetings to prepare for state events, discuss current issues, and plan community service projects. The First Coast delegation Our meetings are a supportive and welcoming environment where all of us develop leadership skills, practice/learn legislative procedures, and engage in meaningful.
