About me and my Gold Award

My name is Jehnya Footitt and I am an 18-year-old Detroit resident and an Ambassador Girl Scout Alumni with the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan (GSSEM). I am now a student at Wayne State University and plan on earning an Environmental Engineering degree. Girl Scouts certainly helped spark my passion not only for the environment and sustainability but for a career in STEM. I am beyond excited to learn all that I can in college so I can go into the work field that pursues my dream of helping communities, people, environmental issues, and planet Earth.

Briefly....Let me tell you more about my Gold Award Project to help convince you to support me and Higher Hopes!

The Gold Award is the highest recognition that a Girl Scout can earn. The goal of every Gold Award Project is to make a difference with an enterprise that is sustainable after completion. For my Gold I chose something I was passionate about while also being an issue in need of resolution. I have chosen to help provide plant-based food options in senior living homes. Before the lock-down, I met with my first choice of a senior living home and was delighted when they agreed that my plant-based menu project can be used in their facility!

As you may know, annual cookie sales are THE single biggest “fundraiser” for Girl Scouts that particularly helps fund sustainable projects like mine requiring a budget. Due to COVID-19 lock-down restrictions, cookie sales booths came to a complete halt in March, leaving me with thousands of boxes to sell person to person via contactless front porch deliveries. I continued selling a couple of boxes each week to friends and family by masking/gloving up and doing porch drop offs, but because of the slow sales, I had a leftover inventory of 1,051 boxes of assorted GS cookies for sale. This is $4,240 worth of factory sealed cases.

In order to complete my Gold Award I had to meet the needs of the budget for my project and had to sell these cookies. Otherwise my GS Troop would be required to pay for all them from our troop funds.
