What are some flight risks?
a dog that was lost and has been reunited
a dog that came from an abusive situation (hoarding, abuse, neglect, etc.)
a dog that was a former stray
a high energy or active dog breed
a regular runner or escape artist
a foster or dog in transport
a newly adopted dog
if you are dog sitting oftentimes those dogs will try to run back to their person or to home
Prevention Tips
Regularly check the condition of your fences and tie outs. Also check the charge and connection on any invisible fences.
By using dog gates and coming in through the garage your dog is less likely to make an escape.
While traveling keep your pup crated or restrained by a seat belt. Rolling down the window, stopping at a gas station, or even an accident can cause your dog to run but if they are properly restrained they are less likely to be injured or loose.
Properly plan for gatherings- if you know there will be doors that might be left open during a family gathering, it might be best to send your pup to a sitter or boarding facility for the day.
Have solid basic obedience. Recall, sit, and stay can be life or death!
Tools to Help Prevent
With a martingale collar your pup is less likely to slip out of their collar.
A slip lead attachment is similar to a martingale collar.
The double leash works great instead of using two separate leashes as those are easy to tangle or accidentally let go of.
Safety clips add one more point of security just in case your pup gets spooked!
Include your pup's name, number, and if they are chipped on the ID tag. Don't forget to add if they are special needs!
These harnesses are longer than most and have more adustable points to help prevent a dog from slipping out!
Crash Tested Containment
Other crash tested methods of containment can be found on Center For Pet Safety website.
GPS Collars & Trackers
While trackers aren't 100% accurate, they can give you a general area of where the dog is. Some of these trackers do not require a subscription while others do.
Live tracking & monitors activity- no monthly fee.

Know The Breed
Research the breed you are getting, this can help prevent your pup from getting lost. If you get an active breed they need to be "working" there are many ways to satisfy a dog's high energy level. Basic obedience training can help too, especially recall. While accidents happen, having a solid foundation with your pup and knowing the breed can help keep your pup from escaping!
