Free Movie Night- In July we gather as a Fairport community for a fun movie night at Center Park West- near the Perinton Rec. Center. Check our our Facebook page for more info!
Scholastic Book Fair - The book fair runs twice a year: fall and spring. PTA volunteers set up, schedule, and staff the book fair. The conference room essentially becomes a book store for a week. Each class is given a time to come down and shop. Your child’s teacher will let you know when their shopping time is so you can send in cash, a check, or put money in an e-wallet for your child to spend. Sales tax is added, so it makes sense to 1. explain that to your child beforehand, 2. send a little extra money to account for this. There have been many sad children holding a $9.99 book and a ten dollar bill who then learn about sales tax for the first time… The spring book fair is buy-one-get-one free. It is a great time to stock up on books for summer reading or to get books as gifts. It should be mentioned that the book fair does not always send every book shown in the book fair flyer. They can all be ordered through the classroom book order or online, but they are not always available for purchase at the book fair. Sometimes this disappoints our small shoppers, so giving them a heads-up is often helpful. Flexibility is part of the fun! (If you believe it, they’ll believe it).
Reading Challenge - The holidays are over. It’s snowing like crazy. It’s a great time to read and read and read. A fun kick-off assembly begins a “count your minutes” type of challenge where classes and grades battle it out for prizes, privileges and bragging rights. The whole school gets into it; usually there is a mystery to solve in connection with the challenge. There are clues on the morning announcements, things hidden around school. It’s fun. And let’s face it.. January in Rochester needs all the fun we can add to it.
K-2 Art Show - One time a year our cafetorium becomes an art gallery, and it coincides with the Spring parent-teacher conference day (no school for students that day). Whether you are in the building for a conference that day or not, you’ll want to swing in and check out the beautiful artwork - one piece for every K-2 student. The art show has its “opening” the evening prior, on a Thursday, when Mrs. Holloway, our terrific art teacher, is there to greet families and help the students show off their masterpieces. PTA volunteers are instrumental in the set up/clean up of this event.
3rd-5th grade Science Fair - This is an optional event in which students can participate on their own or as part of a team (2 students per team). Science fair projects usually show the results of an experiment that the students conducted or are a demonstration of some kind. There are rules and guidelines that help this event to stay safe and reasonable, but in general, students decide what they want to learn about and how they want to present it. It is not a competition, and all participating students get a PTA-provided science fair t-shirt to wear to the evening event.
JA Charity Basketball Game - Come and cheer on your favorite JA teachers as they play basketball against each other (or a team of JA parents). This fundraiser is on a Friday night and is usually held at Johanna Perrin Middle School (because they have bleachers and we don’t). Funny games during time-outs and half-time, an appearance by Jaz, and lots of things for sale (food, treats, pompoms, giant foam fingers claiming to be #1…) round out this fun-filled night. It is a great time for Red Raiders young and old! Proceeds go to a charity chosen by the JA Student Council.
Open House Sweet Treat Social - After you tour your child's classroom at Open House, you can stop by the cafetorium for a sweet treat and talk with other JA families.
International Day - International Day is a day for the 3rd grade class to learn more about the world around them. The five 3rd grade classrooms are decorated to represent one of five continents - Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and South America. Crafts, games, language and script, food or beverage are all activities the students experience in each class. Students spend the day "traveling the world" and learning about different cultures. Dressing up makes the occasion more fun, but is not necessary.
Early Days of NYS - One of the highlights of the fourth-grade experience is the Early Days of NYS on the first Friday in June. Our 4th graders spend a school day rotating through hands-on activities. They rotate through activities.
5th Grade Finale - This is our big celebration for the outgoing 5th graders. The Finale is held on a friday night in June and is Luau themed. There is food, drinks, entertainment, and games durning the event. Tickets are awarded for playing games and activities throughout the evening. Students can use their tickets to enter a chance to win raffle prizes at the end of the night. The 5th graders also get their memory books at the Finale!
School Supply Kit Orders - This one isn’t exactly an event, but this seems like a good place for it. The PTA offers a school supply kit ordering program every year. This program allows you to order your school supply kit(s) for your children starting in April. They also offer backpacks, lunch boxes and water bottles in popular brands like Under Armour and Vera Bradley. You order online and then in August the kits are delivered right to the school. Once they are delivered, there is a pick-up night where you can go to the school to get your kit and any other accessories you may have ordered. This night is optional and if you prefer, you can have the kit delivered directly to your child's classroom. You order by the grade your child will be going in to next year and the kits come with all the supplies listed on the grade supply sheets. The kits also include a sheet of labels with your child's name on it so all supplies can be easily labeled. If there are additional supplies needed, the teacher will typically list those on the welcome letter sent home in August.
Summerpalooza - This is the big, end-of-the-year party featuring music and fun on the JA back lawn. The event is free, but you’ll still want to bring some cash; there is a food truck, a pizza vendor, and an ice cream truck (and your kids will want all of it). Families socialize while they eat on picnic blankets, and kids run around and play on the playground.
