I Married a Donkey is a story about a little girl who pretends to be married to her best friend, Oliver the donkey. Since children love pretend and animals, this book will be relatable for young children. Through simple activities, the girl tells of her affection for the donkey.
This story is inspired and co-written by Burth's granddaughter, Olivia Barnhart. At the age of 6, Olivia wanted to be an author, like Nini (grandma), and met Nini with a blank book made of stapled, multi-colored construction paper. Olivia said that before Nini left that weekend, they were going to write a book together.
Olivia takes horseback riding lessons, an activity that Nini wanted to watch while visiting that weekend. While waiting for her turn on the horse, Olivia played with Oliver, the donkey. She showed so much joy when playing with Oliver, and then decorated his mane with flowers from the field and announced, "I'm going to marry Oliver." And Nini replied, "I think we have our book."
