Reading Instructional Book for Incoming Grade 2 and 3 Students

Overview

Hello! I’m Jeanna Isabel C. Pabalan, a student of the Bachelor of Education Studies at the University of the Philippines Open University.

For my EDS 199 Special Project, I decided to focus on something very close to my heart—helping young children strengthen their reading skills. I designed and implemented a reading support program for incoming Grade 2 and 3 learners, ages 6 to 8, which I piloted during the summer enrichment classes at Lead Christian School.

When I started this project, I wanted it to be grounded on something reliable and effective, so I turned to the Science of Reading. Using its evidence-based methods, I created activities that build literacy step by step through phonics, decoding, and fluency practice. While I crafted the program with a specific group of learners in mind, I also envisioned it as something teachers could easily adapt for other beginning readers.

In this e-portfolio, I share the story of how this project came to life—from the idea to its design and implementation.

I am deeply grateful to my family for their love, support, and encouragement. Their faith in me, patience, and constant reassurance gave me the confidence to keep going, even during difficult moments.

To Sir Ley, my teacher and mentor, I owe immense gratitude for his patience, care, and thoughtful guidance. His feedback and encouragement not only helped shape this project but also inspired me to grow as an educator and instructional designer.

I am sincerely thankful to Tr. Arlyn, my gatekeeper, for her expertise, insight, and constant support. Her guidance, patience, and encouragement ensured that Leap Into Reading was meaningful, practical, and responsive to the learners’ needs.

I also extend my heartfelt thanks to Lead Christian School for welcoming me into their classrooms and allowing me to implement this project. Their support gave me the invaluable opportunity to engage with the learners directly and see the real impact of my work.

To the students who participated in this project, thank you for your enthusiasm, cooperation, and trust. Working with you and helping you grow in your reading journey was one of the most rewarding parts of this experience.

Lastly, I want to acknowledge myself—for the dedication, resilience, and perseverance I invested in bringing this project to life. This journey challenged me in many ways, but it also strengthened my skills, deepened my passion for teaching, and reminded me of the joy of making a difference in learners’ lives.
