In the aftermath of three mysterious deaths at the abandoned Pennhurst Asylum, two cops and a building inspector are assigned to investigate the property, but as they delve deeper into the dark secrets of the asylum, they are confronted with both personal and supernatural demons that test their sanity and change their lives forever.
Pennhurst, an infamous former state school and hospital, epitomizes a dark chapter in the treatment of the disabled in the United States. Established in 1908 in southeastern Pennsylvania, it was originally named the Pennhurst State School and Hospital, intended as a care facility for the mentally and physically disabled. However, it quickly devolved into a place of neglect and abuse, where residents lived in overcrowded, inhumane conditions, suffering from isolation and mistreatment. Exposed by a series of chilling reports in the 1960s, Pennhurst became the center of a historic legal battle that ultimately led to significant reforms in the care of people with disabilities. Closed in 1987, the Pennhurst campus now serves as a haunting reminder of the past abuses, with some buildings repurposed as a controversial haunted attraction, while others advocate for its preservation as a site of memory and education about disability rights and the importance of humane treatment.
