Greetings!
I graduated in May 2020 with my Master's in Library and Information Science and in June 2025 finished a library/archival internship for a library cooperative in Metro Detroit. I also have a Master's degree in Humanities. Prior to graduate school, I spent six years in the social work/human services field, my Bachelor's degrees being in Psychology and Sociology. My goal is to work in a way that will give me a chance to use the intersections of my academic, professional non-profit, activism/organizing, mutual aid, and personal experience having several marginalized identities to flourish by paying it forward, and by removing barriers to access to and preservation of knowledge and proficiency in life-saving information literacy to those most in need. My philosophy is 'Each one teach one.'
As a counselor, case manager and intake assessor at a forensic residential facility for almost five years and a domestic violence safety advocate for one, I have learned quite a bit about meeting people’s needs. I have dealt with the entire spectrum of human functioning. I have also learned quite a bit about social and public services. At the residential facility, I conducted over 100 assessments/interviews to determine a client’s eligibility for our program. Once in our program, I assisted them with achieving the highest level of self-sufficiency possible. I also counseled part time and developed and maintained treatment plans with my clients. In putting their needs first, I was able to tenaciously pursue and acquire ways to meet them, even when it seemed like there was no solution. I was also able to use these skills as a domestic violence safety advocate to provide the most informed assistance possible to survivors of domestic violence. In line with my certification in Florida's Domestic Violence Coalition's policy of Empowerment-Based Advocacy and respect for their autonomy, these services were provided on a requested basis, another aspect of trauma informed care . I believe these learning skills as well as my research skills and non-professional activities are transcendent of any career undertaking. I would love to use my knowledge to help others' access , as knowledge is power and education creates an informed society.
For the last two+ years of my internship, I had been doing archival work. As someone on Disability for c-PTSD and reintegrating into the work force, it's something both compliments my brain and that I'm skilled at. My current archival internship, stemming from my initial librarian internship, is something that I created as protection from an attempt at outsourcing and control. I am a firm believer in the value of institutional knowledge and those who have it.
In one way or another, I've always been a sort of repository for people's experiences and memories, holding space for those who have none. This includes the creation of zines about the decriminalization of sex work and co-creation of a community care zine during the summer 2020 uprisings. I'd like to take this to a professional level, helping collect and preserve the histories of my marginalized comrades and community members to validate, elucidate, and preserve the dignity of their lives and memories.
In addition, I am extremely self-motivated and determined to complete a task to the best of my ability. I require little to no supervision to complete tasks and am always looking for something to do. My former supervisor stated repeatedly that she knew she could throw whatever at me, because she knew I would get it done properly and in a timely manner. As both an activist and former social worker, I am also a strong advocate for people’s rights. Whether it be in the field, the streets, the classroom, or in the courtroom, my experience as well as my education have given me the compassion and know-how to assist those in the most need meet their needs as best as possible.
