Quality management is often a misunderstood discipline within organizations. Many organizations today still have what we call a "little q" quality mindset. This is a very reactive mindset that believes you can inspect quality into products and services. These organizations are "managers of results" focusing on the effect not the causes of the effect. They typical blame people for quality short comings and use a "poke & hope" improvement approach in attempting to address quality issues. More and more organizations are starting to shift to what we call a "Big Q" Quality mindset that emphsizes and prioritizes predictive, preventive and proactive quality management. These organizations are "managers of systemic causes of results" focusing on the systemic causes (root causes) that created the effect (result). The "Big Q" Quality mindset truly believes that the success of people working within a QMS is dependent on the inherent design of the system and its processes. Dr. Deming liked to say, " every system is perfectly designed to give you what you're getting today". "Big Q" Quality management focuses on using advanced quality planning tools and practices to build quality in processes and then analyzes these processes when addressing quality issues and uses Deming's theory - to - knowledge approach to improvement. Within the discipline of "Big Q" Quality management there exists three core universal management processes; Quality Planning, Quality Control, and Quality Improvement. These three management processes must be applied with equal vigour across all Quality management functions to ensure the QMS remains effective, continually improves, creates customer satisfaction and achieves sustained success for the organization.
