Zawaternik (pronounced Zavaterneek) is a group of first generation born in America Polish Highianders who cultivate and promote the culture of the Podhale region of Poland. Located at the foothills of the Tatra Mountains on the border of Slovakia, Zakopane is the capital of this region. A zawaternik is a tree stump which is lit in the spring by the head shepherd of a flock. The stump burns all summer and is the source of fire all season long. Just as the zawaternik burns hot and lends its embers to others, so does this group of musicians, singers and dancers. We symbolize the importance of keeping our tradition alive through song and dance. The students are all children of immigrants. Few of them have been in the Podhale region for more than a month and some have never been to Poland, yet they innately feel that it is their responsibility to keep the traditions of their forefathers alive. The music of the Podhale region is characterized as being very passionate and heavily accented. The traditional instrumentation is three violins and a cello that is fitted with gut bass strings. The group was founded in September 2006 by Bernadetta and Jan Bobek.

Zawaternik to grupa utalentowanych w kierunku muzycznym dzieci oraz młodzież należąca do zespołu od 2006 roku. Powołany do życia zespół liczy sobie 20 osob. Dzieci w zespole śpiewaja oraz graja na instrumentach ludowych. System przekazywania wiedzy oraz praktyka opiera się tylko i wyłacznie na standardach góralskich. Na Podhalu zachowała się bogata kultura ludowa, gwara, strój i muzyka oraz obyczaje związane z pasterstwem i obrzędami religijnymi. Naszym celem jest rozkochanie w młodych artystach pasji do wcześniej wymienionych inspiracji. Należące do grupy dzieci mają okazję zapoznać się z czystą kulturą naszych przodków. Grupa Zawaternik organizuje różnego rodzaju spotkania, także dla rodziców, tj: zabawy, koncerty oraz posiady.
