Spring's Awakening

As the culmination of my degree program, my full scale production and directorial debut has left a lasting impact on the professional path I have chosen. My decision to direct Spring's Awakening, a 19th century play banned for its content, was born out of my desire to create conversation about important issues such as assault and censorship using performance.

Censorship

Spring's Awakening has been censored since its publication in 1891. It took ten years to finally make it to the stage. When it was not completely banned, many passages and much of the dialogue were altered or completely cut from production. The language was also doctored to save face in 19th century Germany's hot political climate. Theatres continued to exercise censorship even when the play was brought to America. Because of this and the subject matter of the text, producing the play in its entirety was of the utmost importance to me.
