Because I had prior experience working with younger children I requested placement in a primary school when I filled out the NALCAP application. I was so excited when I received my carta nobramiento, that it took me a couple of days to notice the words:
Nivel: Ed. Secundaria Bilingüe.
After a quick translation, I realized I was heading to a high school. At first, I was like, "No way, there must be some mistake. I can't deal with teenagers!" My sister, Emily, who is a high school math teacher, assured me that I would be fine. And, yes, I'm one of those people who believes that things happen for a reason, so I accepted the position.
FIRST DAY JITTERS!
After doing some research, I discovered that Sevilla la Nueva is a town about 17 miles southwest from the center of Madrid. Population around 9500. This was definitely not going to be a city school.
When I arrived in Madrid, in the middle of September, one of the first things I did was to take a trip to the school, so I could scope it out, figure out what the commute was going to be like and get familiar with the public transportation. It was about an hour from my apartment to the doors of the school - a metro, a bus, and a short walk. Totally doable!
I got my unlimited transport card and was ready for the next step: actually walking through the doors of the school and seeing it from the inside!
From the moment I entered IES Sevilla la Nueva, I was hit with kindness from every direction. The staff welcomed me and even with the language barrier I instantly felt comfortable. The principal, Raul, bought me a cup of coffee in the cafe, and it was served with a smile by the wonderful Hortensia. I took a tour around the school and it was much smaller than I expected, which helped to ease my nerves. I met with my coordinator Daniel, for the first time, and he gave me the lowdown on my schedule and how the school system worked. I was introduced to a ton of people, and I tried to soak it all in and retain as much info as I could. All I had to do now was go home, finish my introductory presentation, and get ready for the first day of school.
