What's My Week Like?
As a language assistant in Madrid I am required to work four days a week, and cover 16 hours of classes at school. I find this to be an excellent segue for someone who is considering full time teaching.
My schedule consists of:
Four English classes - 1st of ESO (7th grade)
Three Art classes - 2nd of ESO (8th grade)
Seven PE classes - 1st, 2nd, 3rd of ESO (7th,8th,9th grades)
All together I work with over 200 students. It is a lot, I know, and it takes a while to get to know the students' names, especially in a Gym class where they don't sit in the same seats every day. This is a work in progress for me.
I had to be patient and remind myself that this was all very new to me. It was going to take a while to get into the routine and calculate how much energy I was going to need to bring with me to school everyday.
In Art with Isabel, the students are assigned a project to work on over the course of a few weeks. I help translate the instructions into English, and then I go around to the students desks and engage them in conversation about what they are working on. This semester I will plan my own project to present to the students in English.
In Physical Education with Enrique and Jorge, I help the students do warm up exercises and stretches in English. When there is a physical fitness test, I translate the instructions into English. This semester I will plan my own lesson covering parts of the body, healthy eating, and I will also teach the students a game in English.
I also participate in the games and activites which gives me an opportunity to get to know the students better. If a student is injured or not participating for the class I can take time to engage them in conversation on the sidelines.
In English with Miriam, Beatriz, and Berta I plan a weekly presentation with a topic they assign to me and present it for the class. I make sure they cover listening and speaking and focus on engaging the students in conversation.
THE EXEMPLARY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
Expect the Unexpected
I wasn´t aware that I would get to work privately with teachers who want to practice their English skills through conversation. I spend an hour a week with Beatriz and and hour with Berta, who are both teachers in the English department. It has been a pleasure getting to build relationships with them. I admire their determination to better their English and it is amazing that I can help them with that. It keeps me on my toes with English grammer as well! They have also given me a lot of pointers when it comes to teaching, planning lessons, and how the education system in Spain works. These hours have become a highlight in my week.
