Jayachandran has 15 years of research experience in various roles, including Junior Project Fellow, Senior Research Fellow, Project Scientist, Post-Doctoral Fellow, and Assistant Professor, contributing significantly to aquatic ecology and marine biology. He has published 51 research articles in SCI journals, edited 6 books/training manuals, and authored 7 book chapters, 4 conference proceedings, and 5 other articles, with his work garnering 570 citations and an h-index of 14. As a subject editor for One Ecosystem and a peer reviewer for over 97 SCI journal articles, Jayachandran has also organized national and international conferences and training programs.
Jayachandran's academic background includes a BSc in Aquaculture (graduated with the highest rank) and qualification in the ICAR NET (Fisheries Science) examination. He received the "Distinguished Researcher Award" from CUSAT in 2019. His PhD research involved assessing the ecology and temporal changes in benthic communities in the Kodungallur Azikode estuary (northern Vembanad Kol wetland, a Ramsar site), identifying benthic indicator species. He also participated in Arctic expeditions (2016-2018) focusing on benthic communities in Arctic fjords. His other notable research includes assessing the ecology and fish production potential of the Kodungallur-Azhikode backwater ecosystem (funded by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology, and Environment) and contributing to national seawater quality guidelines for heavy metals (Ministry of Earth Sciences). His extensive field experience spans Arctic fjords, coastal backwaters, mangrove habitats, coral reef ecosystems, and seagrass beds, and he is a trained PADI certified open water SCUBA diver.
Jayachandran has described a new genus of clam and four new species (clams, amphipod, and tardigrade) using both conventional and molecular approaches, documenting numerous marine organisms along the Indian and Kerala coasts, including the invasive species Mytella strigata. His research interests focus on the functional diversity and community ecology of aquatic communities in estuaries, mangroves, seagrass-seaweed beds, and deep-sea ecosystems, with current research on Invasive Alien Species (IAS) diversity and its impact in the Arabian Gulf using eDNA metabarcoding. He is proficient in using R packages, MAPINFO, SPSS, CANOCO, Arc-GIS, MAPWINDOW, SURFER, and PRIMER for data analysis and ecological research. He is a Fellow of Future Earth Coasts (FEC) and a member of several esteemed organizations, including the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM), IUCN Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy (CEESP), UN Regular Process PoE for Global Marine Environment Assessment, Estuarine & Coastal Sciences Association (ID: 3135), Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) (ID: 15073), Marine Biology Alumni Association, India, Society of Wetland Scientists, Madison (ID: 076670), Svalbard Science Forum (RIS ID: 10327 and 10325), British Ecological Society (ID: CON-1027404), Society of Marine Biologists, India (ID: SOMB/ER/678/05/080), Mangrove Society of India, and the Association of Fisheries Graduates (ID: AFG/M/2020-21/409).
