LIS 5063-985 Fundamentals of IT
Students will learn the fundamentals of information technology concepts and applications, understand and utilize emerging technologies to meet society's rapidly changing information needs, and apply these in solving various information problems. No student may earn credit for both 4063 and 5063.

Graduates are able to analyze, design, and provide solutions to information problems through appropriate technologies.
Upon completion of the program, graduates will be able to:
a. Understand fundamentals of current technologies that facilitate information management and use in the lifecycle of recorded information, from creation through various stages of use to disposition.
b. Apply technological tools to effectively manage information resources and provide information services.
c. Use human-centered design to satisfy users’ information needs and solve information problems in technologically intensive environments.
d. Understand inherent security, social, political, and ethical issues in information technology.
One of my major blind spots is not necessarily technology--I use technology daily--but the highly technical aspects of hardware and software. Like Organization of Information, the intricate nature of the material made Fundamentals of IT challenging for me, but engaging in this material helped to demystify many concepts around technology and data organization, contributing to goal 1B. With better understanding of coding, design and development, and entity-relationship diagrams (which helped me further understand organizational concepts like Functional Requirements of Bibliographic Records), I will be able to understand more in technical conversations with technology experts. This working understanding of technology will help me collaborate with technical departments in the library.

For the Database Development assignment, I created a database of employees and their relationships to assessments, evaluations and compensation. This assignment taught me the basic philosophies behind database creation, including entities and relationships, primary and foreign keys, and tidy data. Although this assignment was a handful of simple spreadsheets, it felt like an overwhelming amount of information to connect together. I frequently work with HR databases and Learning Management Systems to keep track of my student employees’ data, which operate on amounts of data orders of magnitude larger than I was working with in this small database. This assignment helped me appreciate not only the philosophies and reasoning behind many design choices, but also the work and thought that goes into any given database. I gained a new perspective on the Media Resource Center’s legacy database, which was a home-grown system created on Filemaker, and the work that went into a system that housed and circulated over 10,000 items, kept track of users, and even had the capability of users being authors on their own albums.
