The tool I have chosen for my microlearning project is Qualtrics, a powerful and well-known platform to build and manage surveys and conduct market research projects: https://www.qualtrics.com/
The reason I selected Qualtrics is twofold: on one side, I have access to it through the school I work for and, on the other side, I was curious about its potential to be diverted from its original purpose towards an educational use.
Therefore, I created a small prototype of a MOOC-type training course designed to explain the most salient features of Eventbrite, an event platform I often use to manage some of the Lifelong Learning events organised by my school. The prototype can be accessed by clicking here or on the image on the left.
Please note that the main content of the course, i.e. the videos, have been created by Eventbrite and are publicly available in Youtube. I have reused them for demonstrative purposes. The quizzes, course instructions and overall structure are of my own making.
My main purpose with this project is to create a microlearning activity designed for adult learners, based on the following assumptions from andragogy:
Readiness to learn: This content is oriented to the development of professional skills related to event management roles.
Orientation to learning: This course prototype is conceived to facilitate an immediate application of the information learnt through the videos.
As it often happens with digital tools and online platforms, Eventbrite is a closed system with unique and unambiguous ways to achieve results. As an example, pulling an attendee report from a specific event is something that can only be achieved in one way, by following a specific set of instructions like "go to attendee reports, select the file format e.g. Excel and then click on download". From this perspective, behaviorism provides a great framework to design the formative assessments peppered throughout the course as quizzes, with the administration of positive reinforcements in the form of numerical scores and culturally positive colors (green for correct answers).
However closed the system may be, the main subject of this learning activity (Eventbrite) is a tool. As with any tool, even if there is only one way to correctly handle it, what can be achieved by using it is by definition open-ended. With Eventbrite, one can organise a small concert or a huge convention. Therefore, I doubted that a purely behavioristic approach would suffice to produce meaningful learning. For this reason, at the end of the microlearning course I included an exercise that tries to build on the benefits of authentic assessments, by requiring the learner to practise actively what he/she just learned passively.
