Hello!
Im Jasmine.
I am an occupational therapy student at Dominican University of California. I am originally from Sonoma County, where I am currently based. I graduated with a B.S. in Kinesiology from San Jose State University in May of 2022.
My Favorite Occupations
Hiking and being out in nature is a fulfilling and rejuvinating occupation for me. It allows me to appreciate the beautiful world around us and provides a quiet space to reflect.
I have done both dance and gymnastics since the age of 4. Although I retired from gymnastics upon graduating from SJSU, it has remained a meaningful occupation throughout my entire life. Dance and gymnastics have served as a creative outlet for me and are a big part of who I am.
My journey to occupational therapy came late in my academic career. Although it was seemingly unexpected, looking back I realized how perfectly everything fell into place. Throughout my undergraduate studies, I was fairly set on pursuing physical therapy. Having experience in such a physically demanding sport and studying kinesiology, physical therapy seemed like the obvious choice at the time. It wasn't until the spring of my third year that I truly had the opportunity to explore other related career options. As a requirement of my undergraduate degree, I was expected to complete an internship of 100 hours in the setting and career of my choice. While searching for a site, I felt strongly about branching outside of my comfort zone and decided to do my internship at a pediatric occupational therapy clinic in Santa Rosa over the summer. I knew almost nothing about the field at the time, but made the decision to come in with an open-mind and heart. Little did I know, this internship would be absolutely pivotal in my personal life and professional career. I fell in love with occupational therapy through this internship and was in awe of how special it was. I will always be grateful for the relationships I built with the occupational therapists and for the knowledge and experienced I gained while there. As I was finishing up my internship hours, the clinic had an incoming occupational therapist who happened to be a new graduate from Dominican University of California. It was from this that my interest in the school peaked and I eventually applied and was excepted into this amazing program. Reflecting from where I am today, this journey has been nothing short of incredible. Occupational therapy has felt like my missing puzzle piece, fitting perfectly with who I am and the values I hold.
Selflessness is a value that I live by in my daily life. It is important to me to act in consideration of other's needs solely for the purpose of helping them achieve overall wellness. This is in alignment with the core value of Altruism as outlined in the OTPF. I care deeply for others which will surely carry over and be applicable to my role an an occupational therapist. Having this core value will allow me, as an occupational therapist, to have great empathy, understanding, and commitment to my clients and colleagues.
My core value of establishing peace has a deep, interpersonal meaning. To me establishing peace means finding stillness within myself and also creating peace amongst my community. I wholeheartedly believe in equality for all. Part of this is creating an environment or space that is free of bias and promotes empathy and understanding towards each other. This aligns best with the OTPF value of Equality. I find it important to establish peace within ourselves and amongst each other in order to ensure that everyone has equal opportunity and exercise their human rights. Treating my clients with respect and having an attitude of impartiality is one way I will demonstrate this value in my professional career.
The congruence between my personal values and the values that encompass occupational therapy is truly remarkable. I believe these values subconsciously guided me towards this profession, even though I did not realize I would end up in this profession at the time. This makes me cherish my educational and learning experiences within the field even more special and makes me excited for my future in occupational therapy!
I envision myself working in many settings throughout my career and remain open to all. Although this is the case, I do feel drawn more towards and would like to pursue working in pediatrics. I have had wonderful experiences working in pediatrics and feel that this comes naturally to me. Whether this be in a clinic or in a school, this is a population I feel passionate about working with. Some special interest areas that I envision myself working in are teaching and advocacy. As it is early in my education, I am committed to having an open mind and going with the flow!
Positive
One of my greatest interpersonal traits is positivity. I have always had an optimistic view of others and on life in general. This is one of the traits I value most about myself and consider it special that I have the ability to spread positivity and see the strengths of others. In my personal life I use this positivity to encourage and inspire others. I feel that this will be valuable when working with clients, helping to shine a light on how they view their own lives and occupations. In addition, it will allow for me to provide a positive perspective when discussing with my colleagues and peers and support them in their work.
Giving
Another interpersonal strength that I see within myself is the ability to give. It is important for me personally to be able to provide for those I care about and for those in my community. I ensure to take into consideration other's needs and what resources or acts of service will be most supportive to their individual well-being. As an occupational therapist, having this trait will be of great importance for my clients, peers, and colleagues. Specifically, it will provide me with the tools to understand what resources I can provide or actions I can take to help that person succeed. Each and every one of us have a right to engage in occupation and being able to provide resources to do so will be meaningful for everyone involved.
