Lesson Plan

Grade: 4

Standard: The properties of rocks and minerals reflect the processes that formed them. As a basis for understanding this concept: Students know how to identify common rock-forming minerals (including quartz, calcite, feldspar, mica, and hornblende) and ore minerals by using a table of diagnostic properties.

Objective: Students will identify different minerals and their properties and will interpret how minerals form.

Students will be able to follow along to understand the topic of minerals.
In the atoms lesson, students got a small introduction to the relationship between atoms and minerals. This lesson will go more into depth about the formation and properties of minerals.

Notes

During the PowerPoint, students will fill out the mineral properties form and write down the meaning of the different properties.

Activity

Students will create an Instagram page for a mineral. They will choose any mineral from the PowerPoint and create an Instagram handle. Students will write the name of the mineral under the name section, the about me will be its properties, and the images will be based on the uses of the mineral and its properties.
