Teaching Responsibilities
Teaching Responsibilities
At Xavier University of Louisiana College of Pharmacy, I serve as an instructor for the Oncology therapeutics block in the therapeutics series. Oncology therapeutics is offered during the Spring semester and offered during the summer. The oncology therapeutics course is the only integrated course in the pharmacy curriculum where there are 4 different instructors teaching oncology drugs from the pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, and clinical perspectives. I provide students with practice examples via Brightspace and Clinical case questions. One of my other responsibilities is to proctor exams for Oncology and Infectious Diseases.
I serve as a preceptor for Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) and Advance Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) students. I also serve as a preceptor for post-graduate learners in their first and second year of residency.
As a preceptor, students and residents shadow me for a semester or 6 weeks in IPPE and APPE/Residency, respectively. I have 4-8 IPPE students assigned to me each academic year, and I have at least 10 APPE students assigned to me each year. I am an elective rotation for post-graduate learners. This is considered a normal load for the clinical faculty members. Each student is required to create SOAP notes, present Journal Clubs, develop topic discussions, counsel patients, make evidence-based recommendations, and present a patient case during the experience.
As a part of their teaching component, I help precept Ochsner PGY2 Oncology Residents. I work with them for approximately 6 months on developing learning objectives, teaching appropriate information for pharmacy students, and creating practice and test questions for students.
In Fall 2021, I was responsible for lecturing the Professional Abilities Lab (PAL) IV. This course provided third-year pharmacy students hands on experience with managing, counseling, and dosing chemotherapy. I provided students with practice questions in dosing chemotherapy to supplement their learning.
In Spring 2023, I was a guest lecturer for the Biotechnology/Pharmacogenomics course, which is in the first-year pharmacy curriculum. I also was a guest lecturer for the Physician’s Assistant program. This is something that will be recurring next semester. I was responsible for providing students with readings, designing practice questions for lecture, and creating questions for the finals.
This year, I became a co-coordinator of the Pharmacy Capstone Course. This course if for fourth year pharmacy students and serve as a review for their licensing exam, the NAPLEX. I proctor each exam every 6 weeks, and I serve as an instructor for the reviews, specifically in Oncology and Drug Resources. I create clinical cases and oncology worksheets to help aid them in preparation for the NAPLEX.
