Artist Statement
My art and my writings are connected into a oneness of expression. They stem from each other and are a means to express each other. Love is the central theme of both my art and my writings.
It probably would be best if I first shared with you some of my thoughts about Love. To me, Love is the essence of life, therefore, it is life's natural way. Love is also the unifying force that caringly connects all of life into a oneness of being. Because of this, Love brings with it healing and restoration. With Love, pain and suffering is replaced by joy and fulfillment. Compassion is Love's natural way.
Compassion, being Love's way, is then an important thematic aspect of both my art and writings, which seek to express both the great suffering and pain that occurs due to the destructive absence of Love and the great joy and fulfillment with Love's presence.
Another large contributing part to my writings and art pieces is the research I have done as a social psychologist, where I interviewed over 300 persons from around the world who were singled out as exceptional for their caring responses to suffering.
Those interviewed expressed that they received joy and fulfillment as part of their caring responses. The joy and fulfillment that they expressed receiving was from experiencing being connected with something more than themselves in the process of giving. This connected oneness they experienced as they lovingly responded to the suffering of others. It is these research findings that are expressed through my art.
This connected oneness that is a part of the loving process is an emerging theme that is often expressed in my art. In my art pieces, bodies and other life forms are depicted as interconnectedly merging into a oneness with one another and with the earth. They are “One In Love.”
The compassionate aspect of Love and its resulting joy and fulfillment that is experienced through the connected oneness of Love is often depicted in my art and writings. An art piece depicting this is Mother Teresa bending over a dying man which is titled “Because I Love You,” which were her responding words when he asked her "Why are you doing this?" In this piece, their bodies are depicted as merging into a compassionate oneness.
It is my hope that my art inspires a compassionate response toward others , toward oneself, and toward all aspects of life. Fundamentally, these themes convey my held belief that our true natural way is to be loving, to be loved, and to be Love. The symbol of the heart is artistically used in various ways.
My art and my writings culminate in my hope that they will express Love and be a means of healing, a way to lessen suffering, and a way to spread the joy of being Love, being “One In Love.”
