When you click Colors in the Themes group, the colors that you see next to the theme name represent the accent and hyperlink colors for that theme. If you change any of these colors to create your own set of theme colors, the colors that are shown on the Colors button and next to the Theme name will be updated accordingly.

The Theme Colors gallery displays all the color sets from the built-in themes. As shown below, theme colors contain four text and background colors, six accent colors, and two hyperlink colors. Under Sample, you can see how the text font styles and colors look before you settle on your color combination.

When you save your theme to the Themes folder, it'll automatically show in the gallery under Custom Themes. If your theme isn't in the Themes folder, click Browse for Themes to look for your theme in its saved location.

Using a theme gives your presentation a harmonious appearance with minimal effort. Text and graphics automatically take on the size, colors, and placement defined by the theme, which means less manual work as you create individual slides.

After you create a theme, it's located on the Design tab in the Themes gallery. To try out a theme, rest your mouse pointer over a thumbnail in the Themes gallery and notice how the look of your slide changes.

Assuming you're using a personal Google account, as a workaround I suggest maintaining your template document as its own presentation, which you can either copy to use it as a template, or use Slides - Change Theme - Import Theme to reuse the custom theme in another presentation.

While building a PPT Presentation for work I have run into an issue I am unable to figure out. I've tried searching by typing in a description and all I get are endless how-tos on how to create a new slide. So I'm hoping someone has run into this and can help me fix it.

I'm using PowerPoint 365 and below is a screenshot of an example of what happens when I save the presentation and re-open it. The fix on the fly is to change the slide's layout to the correct theme. When I do that, the titles "Password Managers" and "Multi-Factor Authentication" fall in place under the heading "Defensive Tools". I save the presentation, close the software, re-open, and the slide returns to this.

I have tried creating a brand new slide and rebuilding the content. I have tried this in a new, blank presentation. I have also saved a copy in .ppt rather than .pptx.

Anyone know why this is happening?

With few exceptions, almost every presentation I've ever seen including those developed by marketing professionals who should know PowerPoint inside out, isn't really setting up the theme and using them. Instead users tend to create a slide, put on the graphics and layout they like, then duplicate it for additional slides. At best, someone creates a theme for the Title Master and maybe a single Slide master with the most common single-column of bullet points, but they never update the other layouts (side by side, section, etc).

Click on View, then in the "Master Views" section of the ribbon, choose Slide Master. Do all the slides in the left hand pane have the design your presentation uses or are some all white or a different design?

I'm sorry, I didn't see this response until now. I ended up just creating individual slides for each category on this slide (MFA and Password Managers) and that worked. The presentation is on my work laptop so I will check the "Master Views" like you suggested. To answer your questions, though...

I wasn't borrowing from another person's presentation or anything like that. I started it by selecting "New" and then "Themes" as a suggested search under the search bar. Then when I needed a new slide I just right clicked on the left pane and selected "New Slide" and one with the same theme was created. I would think that means these slides are based on the theme I selected.

The elements appear in the wrong places in both edit and presentation mode. While in edit mode I can put the elements back and test it in presentation mode where everything will be fine. The frustrating part is, after saving the changes and reopening the presentation the slide is messed up again.
