Japan Alps Hiking Map app is easier to consume battery than normal app to take GPS log.
If you want to log GPS location, we recommend that you bring a mobile battery with a capacity of 10000mAh or more as a spare.
The price is cheap and there are various mobile batteries with weight around 200g from around 2000 yen ($20).
There are the following measures as a power saving method.
1. Use the airplane mode while hiking.
2. View the map without taking GPS log.
During hiking, it sometimes passes through valleys, and often goes out of range (you cannot use the Internet connection).
The smartphone always searches for radio waves in order to connect it to the Internet, but this "searching for radio waves in no connection area" operation consumes a large amount of battery.
You can prevent this kind of operation by turning on "alpine mode" on your smartphone.
Tap the airplane symbol displayed when you pull out the notification screen from the screen, or turn on "Airplane mode" in "Network & Internet" of the "Settings" application.

If you just check your location, there is a way to walk without taking GPS log.
You can stop the GPS log by pressing the "Pause" button after you have started hiking with the app.
Even if you pause the GPS log, you can check the current location by displaying the map.

In addition, please be careful as it may take time to detect the current location correctly as a bad effect that does not work "always check the present location" by this method.
To take full advantage of Japan Alps Hiking Map's features, please bring a mobile battery. We think that it is lightweight enough considering to bring GPS device.
In addition, if you have a latest smartphone, it has enough battery for a day hike, but we recommend turning the airplane mode ON.
