Philosophy
I work from a holistic point of view with each child that comes into my educational life. This means that I strive to work with individuals as a whole and in a well-rounded manner. Every student is a unique human being and should be respected as such and given the developmentally appropriate tools to internally learn what is right and wrong and what he/she/they need to be prepared for by the end of the school year.
I am bi-cultural (Mexican and American) and as such, I understand what life is like living and growing among diverse cultural groups and traditions. I was raised in Eastern North Carolina and am of Mexican descent. I am bi-lingual as well; I speak Spanish and English. I will use my experience and my abilities to connect with the diversity among my students and teach them to live inclusively and learn from differences among their peers. Inclusivity and equity is crucial to me as a classroom leader.
Seating arrangements will also be diverse in my classroom. Today the term is called “flexible seating”. I have read that children who are allowed to move around daily are more apt to develop their physical development skills. I will have, at minimum, 4 types of seating choices in student work spaces. The seating areas will be arranged in different patterns around the room. There will always be ample space in my classroom for movement, growth, and learning.
I will also pursue emotional growth among my students. I will remain aware of the emotional environment in the class and place emphasis on a positive vibe throughout the classroom space. I will also be supportive of a relationship between myself and the parents/caregivers at home. In this manner, the children will feel emotionally supported and comfortable in the classroom.
Behavior
Educators need to show what is acceptable behavior through actions. Kindness, compassion, patience, acceptance, and resilience are all traits one should model for students and clients. This way when the class is confronted with the need for these characteristics they will have already been exposed to how they work by your daily living example. This also includes treating young people how you would want to be treated, with respect.
Through talking to children with respect they learn to be respectful themselves and also feel respected. This openness and mutual respect allow for communication and bonding to occur among students and teachers. When there is a trusting relationship between the teacher and student you will be able to guide them on the limits that are in place around them in my classroom, and in society.
Classroom Goal
It is the duty of an educator to observe the class carefully to take into consideration which children learn in which ways and accommodate everyone so as to promote a healthy self-image with each child within education. I will strive to provide a variety of ways in which to present and interpret questions and learning opportunities. I aspire to nurture lifelong learners so that when all of these aspects are taken into consideration as a part of a whole, children will feel taken care of and holistically engaged, and respected. We, as educators of the youth, have to be understanding that each young person is on a different academic level and we have to create a classroom where no child feels left out.
