In this article, it's about the Colonial Pipeline the largest refined products pipeline in the United States (US). Stretching 5,500 miles and transporting more than 100 million gallons of fuel daily to meet the energy needs of consumers stemming from Texas to New Jersey (See Annex A). On a Friday, May 7, 2021, a cyber extortion attempted to knock out a major route for gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. This impacts a lot of countries, which resulted in an increase in gas prices, long lines for gas and decrease of storage. Going foward to prevent this issue using stronger security and protecting/monitaring is going to be priority.
On March 31, 2022: A Massachusetts man pleaded guilty Thursday to a tax scheme targeting Congolese immigrants in greater Boston. The article from US News said, "Federal prosecutors said Boris Shadari, 46, of Swampscott, fraudulently posed as a tax professional and falsely inflated the federal income tax refunds of his clients in order to enrich himself."
(Associated Press). One way to prevent this issue is being save with personal information and not sharing is required.
Just recently, there has been attackers who been spoofing voice message notifications from WhatsApp in a malicious phishing campaign that uses a legitimate domain to spread an info-stealing malware, researchers have found. According to threatpost, "So far, attackers have reached about 27,660 mailboxes with the campaign, which spoofs WhatsApp by informing victims they have a “new private voicemail” from the chat app and includes a link purporting to allow them to play it, researchers said. Targeted organizations include healthcare, education and retail, researchers said." (Montalbano) The problem is that many people are not aware and are there private information is being robbed. To prevent this from occuring, not opening or responding to unsual calls or texts and hiding IP address can save you from falling into this trap.
Lesson Learned: I learned of the recent news occuring and how big this issue is a problem. It seems like its become easy for others to take advange of people and no website or app is safe from attacks or spoofs.
