13:45 - 14:10 I. Dryden: "Helping Nursing Students Enjoy Learning English Vocabulary, Grammar, and Reading"

Abstract: To prepare for entrance exams, students memorize English vocabulary and take practice grammar and reading tests. After entering college, of course, students usually forget most of the vocabulary and lose many other language skills they practiced. This presentation offers enjoyable ways to sharpen students’ English skills through a story game called “Mad Libs.” Students generate many examples of parts of speech, often unusual ones. These words go into a partially-written story that students had not previously seen. The complete story that results can be surprising and amusing, which makes “Mad Libs” a motivating way to learn English. Using “Mad Libs,” students put medical terms and vocabulary into stories like the life of Florence Nightingale or into plots from well-known anime adapted for nursing contexts. Students forget about making mistakes and improve their reading skills and vocabulary. Session participants will get to practice using “Mad Libs” themselves.

要旨:本発表は、大学受験後の看護学生のリーディング授業における英語語彙力や言語能力の低下を改善するため、語彙学習及び読解力向上を継続させるための方法として「物語ゲーム」の「マッド・リブ(ズ)」の使用を提唱する。ナイチンゲールの人生や看護関連の内容にアニメのキャラクターを当てはめたりした物語を「マッド・リブ(ズ)」の教材として用いることで、看護学生の英文読解へのモチベーションと英語学習に対する意識変化を検討したい。

About the Presenter: Izumi Dryden is associate professor at Mie Prefectural College of Nursing. She teaches liberal arts courses on reading in English, literature and medicine, and communications. Her current research interests include the publications and correspondence of Florence Nightingale.

14:15 - 14:40 J. Toews-Shimizu, D. Strable, & K. Ochi: "Empowering Nursing Educators to Employ OER Materials in their Language Classrooms"

Abstract: Incorporating open technologies and high quality educational resources (OER) into your teaching and learning helps facilitate student motivation as well as collaborative and flexible learning. How often have you wanted to customize standardized English language education materials to include more relevant examples for your nursing students or introduce more diverse perspectives? Flexibility in creating localized scenarios is especially important to maintain relevance and motivation in nursing education. Our presentation introduces Pressbooks, a user-friendly platform enabling educators to adapt and localize learning materials. Examples of how Pressbooks can be used in language classroom settings will be presented to highlight its potential for teacher-student collaboration, interactive capabilities, and empower instructors and students with new ways of language learning in nursing education.

要旨:オープン教育資源(OER)は、共有可能で再利用や改訂が可能な学習教材を提供することにより、質の高い教育を支援するものである。特に看護教育においては、学習者のニーズに合わせた柔軟な教材作成が重要である。本発表では、教育者が学習者に合うように教材を改訂することを可能にする制作ツールPressbooksを紹介する。

About the Presenters: Jennifer Toews-Shimizu's teaching background includes ESL in Canada, primary and university IT EFL course development. She serves as Director of Edutech Solutions, developing learning DEI tools for corporate and government agencies. Her research focuses on assessment, professional development and OER.

Kentaro Ochi is an Assistant Professor at Keisen University, specializing in second language acquisition and English education. His research focuses on materials development, and he has been serving as an editor for a MEXT-approved high school English textbook.

Doug Strable is an edtech and learning psychology enthusiast. He has MA in Learning and Technology, where he researched motivational strategies to engage learners with online learning, He co-edited the Japanese version of the OER Pressbook, Teaching in a Digital Age. 

14:45 - 15:10 M. Porter: "Using a Spoken Corpus of Patient Narratives in the Development of a Fourth-Year Nursing Course"

Abstract: Encountering patient narratives can help nursing students to develop empathy and imagine ways to provide more appropriate and culturally sensitive care. The presenter received a JSPS grant to create a spoken corpus of patient narratives from both native and non-native English-speaking foreign-born residents in Japan. To date, 35 narratives have been gathered through semi-structured and self-guided interviews, and the spoken corpus, including transcripts, are freely available online for adaptation and fair use. The presenter has developed a fourth-year nursing course based on selections from the corpus aimed at improving English listening comprehension and cultural competency. This presentation begins with a short introduction of the characteristics of the spoken corpus followed by an introduction of the themes covered, teaching approach, and student reactions. The presenter will also illustrate how the spoken corpus can be used as a learning resource as part of another course

要旨:患者の語りに出会うことで、看護学生は共感力を養い、より適切で文化的に配慮したケアを提供する方法を想像することができます。発表者は、日本学術振興会の助成を受け、英語を母国語とする在日外国人とそうでない外国人の患者の語りの音声コーパスを作成しました。現在、半構造化面接と自己誘導面接により35人のナラティブを収集し、その音声コーパス(トランスクリプトを含む)は、オンラインで自由に翻案や公正利用が可能である。発表者は、このコーパスからの抜粋をもとに、英語の聴解力と異文化理解を向上させることを目的とした4年生の看護学の授業を開発しました。本発表では、まず音声コーパスの特徴について簡単に紹介し、次に取り上げるテーマ、教育方法、学生の反応について紹介する。また、他の授業の一環として、音声コーパスをどのように学習リソースとして利用できるかを説明します。

About the Presenter: Mathew Porter has been teaching nursing students since 2015. He is a co-founder of the Japan Association for Nursing English Teaching and a current assistant director. He is interested in curriculum design, simulation learning, and self-directed learning.

15:20 - 15:45 P. Mathieson: "Creating Engaging Materials for Medical and Nursing Students: An Academic Vocabulary Graded Reader Series"

Abstract: This presentation examines the development of a unique graded reader series that incorporates all of Coxhead’s (2000) Academic Word List (AWL) items, and which involved student input in its creation. The graded readers series (‘The AWL Readers’) follows the lives of fictional medical university students, and was created by the presenter primarily to support medical students’ academic vocabulary learning. The institutional and teaching/learning context which gave rise to the creation of The AWL Readers series will be discussed, as will the vital roles played by numerous medical students, nursing students, and faculty in its creation. It is hoped that this presentation might provide some ideas and inspiration for anyone considering developing their own teaching materials that are connected with the lives of their students. In particular, the presenter aims to explore the possibility of creating similar graded reading materials targeted specifically at nursing (rather than medical) students.

About the Presenter: Paul Mathieson is an associate professor in the Department of Clinical English at Nara Medical University, where he teaches (and tries to amuse, engage, and inspire) medical students and nursing students.

15:50 - 16:15 S. Thornton: "On Selecting Suitable OET Materials for Nursing Students: Options and Challenges"

Abstract: The OET is an established test of English for Medical Purposes and one of the most relevant qualifications for nurses who are aiming to work internationally, being accepted as proof of English communication ability in at least 15 countries, and considered a requirement by many medical facilities when selecting international candidates. After providing some general information about the OET, this practice orientated presentation will consider some of the options and difficulties when attempting to select OET materials for student nurses. It will focus on the structure and content of current official OET materials, and evaluate those in terms of suitability for self-study and in-class use. It will also discuss potential alternatives to the official materials, and options for students who would find OET too challenging but would like to work towards it.

要旨:OETは確立された医療のための英語(English for Medical Purposes)の試験であり、国際的に活躍することを目指す看護師にとって最も重要性の高い資格の一つである。少なくとも15カ国で英語コミュニケーション能力の証明として認められ、外国人候補者を選抜する際にあらゆる医療機関において必須要件とされている。本プレゼンテーションでは、OETに関する一般的な情報を提供した後で、学生看護師のためのOETの教材を選ぶ際の選択肢と困難について検討する。現在のOETの公式教材の構成と内容に焦点を当て、独習や授業内の使用への適否という点から評価する。また、公式教材に代わる選択肢や、OETの難易度が高すぎると感じながらもOETを受験したい学生のための選択肢についても検討する。

About the Presenter: Sean Thornton is an Assistant Professor at Hamamatsu University School of Medicine. He is regularly using OET materials with self-selected internationally minded students.

16:20 - 16:45 P. Collins: "Thinking Critically and Sharing Perspectives: Creating and Implementing a Reading-Writing Component for Nursing Students"

Abstract: At Japan’s colleges and universities, there is generally a gap between students’ traditional grammar-translation backgrounds and their potential as users of English for academic Purposes (Collins & Suzuki, 2018). This presentation outlines a reading-writing component created to help bridge that gap for a required Nursing Academic English course. Over the course of the semester, students individually read a series of 450-word essays on engaging topics not covered in the textbook such as types of patients and cross-cultural communication. In groups, they identified key content and target language with scaffolding provided by graphic organizers (Parrish, 2018). Finally, students drew on their own experiences, opinions, and ideas to write response paragraphs. A sample reading-writing sequence will be shared, along with student writing outcomes showing how the sequence enabled them to think critically about content, willingly communicate their own perspectives, and autonomously recycle vocabulary and expressions from the reading.

要旨:本発表では看護系必修アカデミック英語コースにおけるリーディング・ライティング指導の概要を述べる。学習者は450語のエッセイを読み、内容や構成、そして言語を理解したうえで、トピックの問題に対する批評的意見を書いた。リーディングとライティングの統合スキル学習例やその効果に関して報告する。

About the Presenter: Peter Collins has been teaching at Tokai University since 1998 and is the coordinator of Tokai’s Nursing Academic English course. His research interests include EAP, situated language, and integrating secondary and tertiary English education in Japan.

C. Cheetham: "Graded Readers: A Springboard for Collaborative Research Projects with Medical Students"

Abstract: Collaborative research projects are a means for medical students to engage and explore health, medicine, medical pioneers, and cross-culture themes. However, limited language skills may make research into these areas intimidating. To read unsimplified texts without assistance, language learners need a vocabulary size of approximately 7,000 or 8,000 words (Nation, 2014). Alternatively, content-based graded readers can be an ideal resource for student research projects. This presentation outlines the various stages of a collaborative research project that uses graded readers. In stage one, students share resources and compare notes with a universal note-taking template. In stage two, students summarize their findings using a summary template. Finally, in small interactive groups, students present their findings. The project outcomes show how the stages assist students to research in the target language without relying heavily on translation software. Tips will be offered for replicating this kind of research project with nursing students. 

要旨:本発表では、翻訳ソフトに頼らず、医学部生の英語の研究プロジェクトをサポートするコンテンツベースのグレイディドリーダーの使用方法について紹介する。この段階での学生の研究活動として、共同のノートテイキング、要約、インタラクティブなグループプレゼンテーションについて報告する。

About the Presenter: Catherine Cheetham is an Associate Professor at Tokai University with over 20 years of EFL teaching experience. Her main interests are extensive reading, content-based instruction, and materials development.  

S. Yokoyama: "海外看護実習とENP:その意義と今後の可能性" (Overseas Nursing Practicum and ENP: Its Impact and Future Possibilities)"

Abstract: 宮崎大学医学部看護学科とタイ王国のプリンスオブソンクラ大学(PSU)で学生の看護実習が始まって15年以上になる。日本における看護学生の海外研修は、文化交流が主流を占め臨床での看護実習は全国的にみて例が少ない。本学医学部附属病院に就職したENP体験者は外国人患者の対応にも当たっている。今後のENPの方向性も提示したい。

要旨:It has been more than 15 years since the University of Miyazaki started elective nursing practicum with Prince of Songkla University in Thailand. Overseas training for nursing students in Japan seems to be mainly focused on cultural exchange, and clinical nursing practicum may not be as common. One of the impacts of this program is that some ENP experiencers in the past who got a job at the university hospital have been reportedly assigned to deal with foreign patients. In this presentation, I would also like to touch upon the future direction of ENP.

9:00 - 9:25 A. Simpson, J. Hensley, & Y. Hirai: "Developing an English Speaking Simulated Patient Program for Student Doctors and Nurses"

Abstract: Simulated Patients (SPs) have been used in Japan since the 1970s to develop communicative skills and evaluate learners. English speaker SP (ESSP) training does not just focus on the standardized OSCE diagnosis interview but also patient-centered approaches. This method is being used throughout Japan for student doctor training. Furthermore, it can be an effective way for student nurses to improve their English communication, cultural competence, clinical skills, and preparation for international certification exams. However, further research is needed to understand the impact of this approach and how it can be integrated into nursing education programs.

The University of Miyazaki has recently developed and implemented an ESSP training program for student doctors. The progress of this program will be shared with the audience including SP training, cases, role plays, student feedback, and future plans. Furthermore, a call will be made for collaboration in a potential nursing ESSP Kaken project.  

要旨:英語スピーキング模擬患者トレーニングは、学生にとって英語コミュニケーション、文化的能力、臨床スキルの向上、国際認定試験への対策などに効果的な方法となり得る。

現在宮崎大学では、学生医師向けに、模擬患者トレーニング、ケース、ロールプレイ、フィードバックなどのトレーニングプログラムを開発・実施しています。本セッションの目的は、学生看護師向けに調整された同様のトレーニングプランを開発することである。

About the Presenters: Alan Simpson has a background mainly in ESP, and over the last few years has been teaching and researching about EMP & ENP. His interests include pedagogy, OET, Simulated Patients, Medical Humanities, Study Abroad & Professional Identity Formation. 

Joel Hensley mainly teaches university ENP. Besides training as an ESSP, he is conducting a nationwide study into cross-cultural nursing in Japan, the end goal of which is the incorporation of intercultural awareness and communication in the ENP classroom.  

Yu Hirai currently teaches English to medical and nursing students. He taught business English and TOEIC before his current job. His main interest is to integrate electronic devices and learning software into education.

9:30 - 9:55 B. Zeff: "Developing a Nursing English Course: An Innovative Approach"

Abstract: This presentation will discuss a cutting-edge approach to teaching nursing English. "English Communication for Nursing" is an innovative text and online digital course that provides nursing students with the necessary English language skills for effective communication in healthcare settings. In addition to a unique interactive video technology --- enabling students to watch videos, learn vocabulary, and practice speaking using "read aloud" technology, the course also utilizes the latest chatbot technology to enable role-play-like practice for nurses in hospital settings. Using prompts provided in the online system, students produce target phrases to complete tasks to encourage communicative awareness and pronunciation practice. Still in the development stage, with the help of ChatGPT, students will participate in simulated conversations with virtual patients and colleagues. How the audience might implement such a program and the survey results conducted with students who completed the course will also be discussed. 

要旨:本発表では、看護英語教育における最先端のアプローチについて説明します。"看護のための英語コミュニケーション "は、看護学生に医療現場での効果的なコミュニケーションに必要な英語力を身につけるための革新的なテキストとオンラインデジタルコースです。独自のインタラクティブ動画技術---動画の視聴、語彙の学習、「音読」技術によるスピーキング練習を可能にするほか、最新のチャットボット技術を活用し、病院内での看護師のロールプレイに近い練習を可能にします。このようなプログラムを視聴者がどのように導入するか、また、コースを修了した学生に実施したアンケートの結果についても説明します。

About the Presenter: B. Bricklin Zeff is an experienced English and Communication teacher with over 35 years in Japan.  With a PhD in Applied Linguistics, his focus of study is on Pragmatics, Speech Act Theory, and Communicative Approaches to language learning.

10:10 - 10:35 H. MacCallum: "Developing Discussion Skills for 2nd Year Nursing Students"

Abstract: This presentation will focus on integrating discussion skills into a topic-focused discussion module as part of a study abroad program. Discussion topics were designed to provide resources for self-directed learning ensuring class time was available for skills instruction, practice, and topic discussion. The goals of the course were to increase learners’ confidence in speaking about more complex topics, build topic-related vocabulary, develop fluency, and foster a co-operative learning environment. Discussion skills were scaffolded into chunks, building on the skills each time with the aim of integrating these into the weekly discussions. The presentation will review the needs analysis undertaken, provide details of the skills element of the module including a practice activity, followed by looking at an example of a discussion topic with the resources provided for self-directed study.

要旨:このプレゼンテーションは留学プログラムの一環である、トピック中心のディスカッションの授業にディスカッションのスキルを組み込むことに焦点を当てている。本カリキュラムは、学生が毎週ディスカッションのスキルをみがき、それらをトピック・ディスカッションに取り入れていくことを目的としている。また、各学生は自主学習を通じて十分な授業時間と幅広いトピックに関するディスカッションのためのスキルの指導サポートも得ることができる。このプレゼンテーションでは、ニーズ分析を振り返り、実際に授業で学生が学んだディスカッション・スキルを概説し、自己指導型学習のための資料を含むディスカッション・トピックの例を提供する。

About the Presenter: Hayley MacCallum teaches general English, Medical English, and Nursing English at Yokohama City University, and with a previous career as a registered nurse, aims to enhance her students’ experience by bringing that prior knowledge and experience into the classroom. 

10:40 - 11:05 N. Dilani: "Motivation to Learn English in Nurses"

Abstract: English has become an essential language requirement for many professions by now. However, is observable that this requirement has not been seriously considered for the nurses in recruitment as well as in job performance in Sri Lankan context. Accordingly, the current study attempted to study the nature of the motivation of nurses to learn English. The study further explored whether the nurses are motivated to learn English, if not the reasons for that and if so what type of motivation pattern they show. For this survey on motivation, 30 nurses below the age of 50 were selected conveniently as the sample from a state hospital in Sri Lanka. A Google form questionnaire prepared based on Gardner’s ATMB was given to the participants and the same platform was used to analyse the data. The findings show that the nurses are not considerably motivated to learn English mainly due to the reasons that they do not find English essential for their job, they are not tested on English skills and even though some feel its need they do not find time to learn due to busy ad hectic schedules. Nowadays, mainly due to the economic crisis in Sri Lanka, nurses have shown their interest in migrating to an English-speaking country, which shows their integrative motivation pattern. 

要旨:看護師における英語学習の動機付け英語は今や多くの職業で必要不可欠な言語となっている。しかしながら、スリランカでは、看護師の採用や職務遂行において、この要件が真剣に考慮されていないことが看て取れる。そこで、本研究では、看護師の英語学習に対する動機付けの本質を明らかにすることを試みた。さらに、看護師が英語を学ぶ意欲を持っているかどうか、持っていないとすればその理由は何か、持っているとすればどのような意欲のパターンを示すかについても調査した。この動機付けに関する調査のために、スリランカの国立病院から50歳未満の看護師30名が便宜的サンプルとして選ばれた。GardnerのATMBに基づいて作成したGoogleフォームの質問票を参加者に示し、同じプラットフォームを使ってデータを分析した。その結果、英語が仕事に不可欠でないこと、英語力をテストされないこと、必要性を感じていても多忙なスケジュールのため学習する時間がないことを主要な理由として看護師は英語学習に対するモチベーションが高くないことが判明した。昨今、スリランカの経済危機を背景に、看護師は英語圏への移住に関心を示しており、このことは彼らの統合的動機付けのパターンを示している。

About the Presenter: Dr. Nipunika Dilani , a senior lecturer in the Department of English at the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka has completed her BA from the University of Peradeniya, MA from the University of Kelaniya and PhD from the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka. She is currently following an MA in TESL programme. Her research interests include English literature, Linguistics, Buddhism and Comparative Studies. 

11:10 - 11:35 J. Thomas: "Teaching Nursing English Within an Intercultural Understanding Framework"

Abstract: The Japanese healthcare system has been evolving their English resources and use of interpreters nationwide. Though this is a noble endeavor, nursing students often struggle with foreign patients and English skills learned in K-12 education do not suffice adequately. In order to position students towards a more authentic learning and use of English, the syllabus and content included a heavy focus on sociolinguistic differences and aimed to make a basis of communication through intercultural understanding. The purpose of this research study is to survey students on tasks and content to find if an intercultural understanding perspective aid students ESP study positively.

要旨:日本の医療制度は、全国的に英語資源と通訳の活用を進化させています。しかし、看護学生は外国人患者の対応に苦慮することが多く、幼稚園から高校までの教育で学んだ英語力だけでは十分ではありません。そこで、シラバスの内容も、社会言語学的な差異に重点を置き、異文化理解を通してコミュニケーションの基礎を作ることを目的とした、より本格的な英語の学習と活用を目指したものとなっています。本研究の目的は、異文化理解の視点が学生のESP学習を積極的に支援するかどうかを確認するために、タスクとコンテンツについて学生を調査することである。

About the Presenter: Jon Thomas is a tenured university lecturer in Japan. He holds an M.Ed and an MBA. Using ESP, CLIL, and EM in the classroom and in the tourism sector. His research focuses on innovation for EFL education, especially programming for intercultural communication.
