PROCEDURE OF TEACHING
This is it! Who would’ve imagined that I would be able to conduct my teaching practice here in Indonesia? For my teaching practice, I strictly followed my structured lesson plan that incorporated a student-centered approach. I began each lesson with a warm-up activity to activate prior knowledge and engage students. I use gamification, wherein I use activities for my students to actively participate in my lesson. Then, I introduced the topic using real-life examples and visual aids to make the lesson more relatable, plus the idea that I also incorporated into my discussion about my country, related to my lesson. The main instructional phase involved interactive discussions, group activities, and hands-on exercises to ensure students actively participated. To ensure that my students can relate to what we are tackling, I incorporate Bahasa as a translation to my PowerPoint presentations. Finally, I concluded the lesson with a recap and a short quiz, allowing students to reflect on what they learned and clarify any doubts.
TIME MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZING ACTIVITIES
Managing time effectively was crucial to ensuring all aspects of the lesson were covered. I allocated specific time slots for each activity, keeping them balanced to maintain students’ attention and avoid rushing through important concepts. During group discussions and activities, I monitored time closely to ensure that students stayed on track and had enough opportunity to complete their tasks. Just like for example on the last part of my lesson, I allocated 6 minutes per slide to manage time effectively and avoid causing delay to the next teacher. Additionally, before I started my lesson properly, I prepared all my instructional materials in advance to minimize time wasted during transitions between activities.
PROBLEM SOLVING
Throughout the teaching practice, I encountered challenges, first of all is that I was given a really broad topic, and I only had limited time to tackle all of these, technical issues with digital presentations, and of course, the language barrier between me and my students. To address these issues effectively, I began by carefully refining my approach to the content. I prioritized the main topic and systematically identified sub-topics that were accessible and those that would require more in-depth discussion and understanding. This strategic planning allowed me to allocate more time to the complex topics, ensuring that students had a clearer grasp of the material before moving on, which ultimately led to a more efficient use of class time and a deeper comprehension of the subject matter. In terms of communication, I implemented differentiated instruction techniques by providing translated explanations in my PowerPoint presentations. This means I ensured that each slide included key terms and concepts translated into Bahasa, making the content more approachable for my students. Additionally, I reached out to a student buddy who was fluent in both English and Bahasa. This collaboration proved invaluable, as they assisted me in translating my explanations during class, which fostered a better understanding and encouraged student engagement. When faced with technical difficulties, I quickly used some of my traditional instructional materials to keep them entertained while I was fixing technical difficulties.
Special thanks to Ms. Cavella Noor Putri for being our buddy/translator during our teaching practice in Muliska! Terima Kasih banyak, Cavella!😘
To Ms. Amalia Febriyanti To'at thank you for being there with us until the end together with ASU, especially for being our eat & sleep friend! Terima Kasih banyak, Amel!🥰
CLASSROOM MANAGAMENT
Maintaining a productive and disciplined learning environment was a key aspect of my teaching practice. I established clear classroom rules and expectations at the beginning of each session to set a positive tone. I used a combination of verbal cues, eye contact, and positive reinforcement to manage student behavior effectively. Engaging students through interactive lessons reduced distractions and kept them focused. Additionally, I encouraged participation by fostering an inclusive environment where students felt comfortable asking questions and sharing their thoughts. By maintaining a respectful and supportive atmosphere, I was able to facilitate a smooth and enjoyable learning experience for all students.
Overall, my teaching practice provided valuable hands-on experience in lesson delivery, classroom management, and problem-solving. Reflecting on my performance, I identified areas for improvement. Moving forward, I aim to continue developing my teaching skills to create more engaging and effective learning experiences.
