CURRICULUM
Kurikulum Merdeka, or the "Independent Curriculum," is an educational reform introduced by Indonesia’s Ministry of Education to replace the rigid, one-size-fits-all approach of previous curricula. In recent years, Indonesian schools have been transitioning to the "Kurikulum Merdeka" or "Independent Curriculum," which emphasizes a more flexible and student-centered approach. By fostering independent thinking, creativity, and character development, this curriculum aims to equip Indonesian students with the skills they need to thrive in the modern world.
Pancasila is the foundational philosophical theory and guiding principle of Indonesia, embodying the nation's core values and cultural identity. At SMP 5 Muliska, Pancasila plays a crucial role in shaping students’ understanding of their national identity, promoting unity among diverse groups, and fostering a sense of moral responsibility. The five principles of Pancasila are:
1. Ketuhanan Yang Maha Esa– Belief in the One and Only God, emphasizing spiritual faith and religious tolerance.
2. Kemanusiaan yang Adil dan Beradab– Just and civilized humanity, highlighting the importance of fairness, respect, and compassion for all individuals.
3. Persatuan Indonesia– The unity of Indonesia, encouraging solidarity and harmony among the nation's diverse ethnic, cultural, and linguistic groups.
4. Kerakyatan yang Dipimpin oleh Hikmat Kebijaksanaan dalam Permusyawaratan/Perwakilan– Democracy guided by the inner wisdom of deliberations among representatives, promoting thoughtful dialogue and collective decision-making.
5. Keadilan Sosial bagi Seluruh Rakyat Indonesia– Social justice for all the people of Indonesia, focusing on equitable access to resources and opportunities.
At SMP 5 Muliska, Pancasila is seamlessly integrated into the school curriculum through subjects like civics (PPKn) and social studies. These subjects explore the historical and philosophical aspects of Pancasila, allowing students to appreciate its relevance in contemporary society. Additionally, Pancasila is reflected in various school activities and student conduct, emphasizing the importance of national values and fostering harmonious relationships among students.
During the third week of our teaching practice and observations, the school dedicated an entire week to activities related to Pancasila. This initiative is designed to actively engage students with the principles of Pancasila in a practical and enjoyable manner. A faculty member explained, "These activities will teach the students life skills that they may use in the future," highlighting the dual focus on personal development and value education.
Similar to the Philippines, where Technical Livelihood Education (TLE) is embedded in the curriculum during secondary years, SMP 5 Muliska structured its Pancasila activities from February 17 to 21, 2025. Each afternoon of that week was reserved for hands-on sessions that reinforced both the principles of Pancasila and practical skills. Activities included crafting door mats, creating organizers from seashells, making flower vases out of coconut husks, and making traditional shuttlecocks. Each of these projects not only allowed students to express their creativity but also served as a means to internalize Pancasila's values. For instance, while making shuttlecocks, students learned about teamwork and persistence while engaging in discussions about cultural heritage and the importance of unity.
Overall, the Pancasila activities at SMP 5 Muliska are designed with a dual purpose: to instill core values in students and equip them with essential life skills that will benefit them in various aspects of their future lives. Through this comprehensive approach, the school promotes a deeper understanding of Pancasila as both a guiding philosophy and a practical framework for everyday living.
