Ten years ago, our family chose to move to San Marino for our children. San Marino schools have maintained a reputation of excellence for decades, and though that excellence in education can be claimed by many of the surrounding school districts, the close community of San Marino is unique. With twin boys currently enrolled at SMHS in 11th grade, a 6th grade daughter at HMS, and a 4-year old preschool child (Carver School Kindergarten class of 2019-20), my time has been committed to volunteering and serving the amazing parents, teachers, staff and students of San Marino schools.
Throughout our time here in San Marino, I have always been so amazed by the generous spirit of this community. When I recruited parents to volunteer for PTA, it always amazed me that so many parents were so eager to serve our students. Parents will take on roles that are the equivalent to jobs -- spend hours volunteering weekly, raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the schools, communicate with unhappy parents -- all as a volunteer. And this level of commitment develops relationships that last a lifetime, as we support each other through the trials and tribulations of parenting. That spirit of volunteerism, civic engagement, and close relationships among the people of San Marino is so impressive and unique.
In addition to input from our community, I will apply my professional and personal experience to make informed and thoughtful decisions as a School Board Governing Member. As a graduate of UCLA (B.A., Political Science; B.A., Sociology) and Stanford University Graduate School of Education (M.A., Policy Analysis and Evaluation), I am trained to research and understand how policies shape programs, and how programs can be applied to real world settings to meet goals. Through my work as a middle-school teacher at Madison Middle School (my alma mater), graduate school admissions advisor (Truman State University, Ronald E. McNair TRIO Program, Missouri), and education researcher/program evaluator in a nonprofit education resources company in New Jersey, I have experience in all fields of education. On a personal level, in service to my children's schools for the past ten years, I have fulfilled a number of volunteer roles, including fundraising, membership, allocations, and mother-flocker. I was also honored to receive the Carver School Golden Nugget award in 2014. For the 2018-19 school year, I am continuing to serve at HMS and SMHS in a variety of roles.
