Getting into a Unani medical college is not an easy task. There is fierce competition with lakhs of applicants for only a few thousand seats. Which can be seen only in India. Whoever clears the pre-medical test? He has undoubtedly done a commendable job. But is this an end in itself? Or is it just the beginning?
Were all those students who failed to make it to the Unani medical college not good enough to become doctors? And were all the students who passed the PMT eligible to become? After all, anyone who can cram well with above-average intelligence will be able to crack it clean in most circumstances.
There are many things one has to opt out of, for one to opt for a career in medicine, Even if it is only for the period you are in Best Unani Medical Colleges in India. It is difficult, if not impossible, to make a creative effort or take the sport seriously. Even in summers there is no more than 2-3 weeks off from classes. Years in medical college are undoubtedly punishable. It really involves directing most of your free will and energy into this course.
Most of the medical students I have come across lack conviction and enthusiasm. Aren't students in other fields always smarter and more innovative? Ask most medical students why they opted for medicine and very rarely you will get a solid and confident answer. Often it is a monotonous tone lamenting the backwardness of medical school, but then they put Dr. Ignore the title. Tell them to take it away and they will tremble but still they always seem to drown in self-pity.
Many go for it just because their forefatherswere doctors!
India produces an almost sufficient number of doctors to serve its rapidly growing population. But still at the ground level it is a different story. One can blame the low salary in the government sector as many doctors opt for private practice. But still if they really focused about helping people then the situation would be much better than it is today. Things will be far better if one is truly motivated to serve mankind so as to meet all the challenges even when there are relatively less painful alternatives available. It can be described as the mental satisfaction derived from the goal of overcoming all other adversities. But this is not so.
The reason for all this is a degree of obsession. The degree of being a doctor is given more importance and not what is involved in the profession. It's not that doctors don't work hard and I don't mean that there are so many doctors who love their work. What I am talking about is the basic reason why most people choose the profession which in most cases determines their attitude towards the end. Some others go for it because it is considered a 'safe' profession, which I think is essentially wrong and even an outdated way of looking at things. Some simply follow the lines of least resistance, not knowing what's going on with them. Some people go for it because of the amount of 'respect' doctors get because it's just a 'better' profession. All these causes and many such other forms are mere illusions of the mind and it is they who are most aspired.
