There is something really exciting in a field in our village which not many people know about. It is an Observation Post!
The history of this place goes back to World War 1 but the brick part which looks like a tower was constructed in 1937.
The Stoke Golding nuclear monitoring post was a master post. It opened in 1960 and closed in 1991 at the end of the Cold War.
We looked online and found lots of information. This is from an article in The Hinckley Times:
It is one of 19 secret bunkers across Leicestershire - others in the borough include Markfield, Thurlaston and Twycross. They were grouped in clusters of three or four with the master post reporting directly to a group control in either Coventry or Bedford.
We were really lucky and met a man called Doug when we were out walking. He told us all about the Observation Post and let us have a look around. It was so lucky because it isn't normally open very often for anyone to look around.
The blue marking is where the post is. It is at the back of the Stoke Lane Cemetery and Wildlife Area.
