About me
My name is Jennifer Murray do Carmo and I am a high school social studies teacher at Kingswood Regional High School in Wolfeboro, NH. James Foley graduated from Kingswood in 1992 and I knew him as a young child. We both swam on the Wolfeboro Swim Team and I babysat for the Foley's one summer. Jim's captivity and death rippled through my school community. His former teachers work in my district, my colleagues, and my student's parents, were his classmates. I did not know James Foley much when I began this project. I suppose, like many Americans, what I knew most about him was the tragedy of his death. But, through the process of developing this class, and the power of the incredible documentary JIM: The James Foley Story, directed by Kingswood Alumni, Brian Oakes ('92), I have learned so much about Jim and from Jim. Jim is still teaching. He teaches through the model of the life he lived, how he is remembered by those who loved him most and those of us who are inspired by his selflessness, empathy and moral courage. His legacy is embodied with incredible strength and grace by his mother, Diane Foley. Her story, the continuation of his, is just as transformational. Diane's story challenges us to ask the most profound questions about forgiveness, love, faith, redemption and the country we want to be in the world. This curriculum is a work in progress, and every bit the product of the 107 incredible young people who have taken this class and built it with me along the way.
