Russell, J. O., A. Aiyyer, J. D. White, and W. Hannah (2017), Revisiting the connection between African Easterly Waves and Atlantic tropical cyclogenesis, Geophys. Res. Lett., 44(1), 587-595, doi:10.1002/2016GL071236

This study updates the statistics relating African Easterly Waves to tropical cyclogenesis finding that up to 72% of Atlantic TC formations are influenced by AEWs. Further it shows that there is no correlation between TC formations and the peak in AEWs (as shown in the image to the right). Rather there is correlation between the convectively generated circulation in the low-levels of AEWs. Further this relationship is stronger in low EKE years than in high EKE years.
