Work in Progress:Runoffs and Representation: The Impact of Black Candidates on Voter Turnout in Jacksonville and Tampa, FloridaDraft available. The study examines whether Black mayoral candidates influence Black voter turnout across precincts with varying racial composition. Using election data from Jacksonville and Tampa, Florida between 2011 and 2023, the analysis leverages each cities' electoral systems to identify how advancement to a runoff serves as a clear signal of electability. Employing quadratic ecological regressions, the study estimates Black turnout across precincts with different Black population shares and compares mobilization between first round and runoff elections. Additional cities to be examined will be Miami and Orlando.Â
