WEB & SOCIAL MEDIA
WEB & SOCIAL MEDIA
Uploading and keeping my audience in the loop is one of the best parts of my position. See how I do it below.
Social media was the first time I realized I could make GVTV my own. I helped put up live updates at the girls soccer state championship match my freshman year, with the help of one of the EICs, Emma. I made silly little graphics just because I could. That's where I fell in love with wanting to post more. I taught myself Photoshop so I could make each graphic better than the next, even trying to shun templates on Canva. It allowed me to marry my love for storytelling with my love of social media.
While other accounts are very reliable at posting when and where all the events are, finding final scores was information that was hard to come across if you didn't know where to look. And it makes sense. Being at the events and getting photos and video to ensure equitable coverage has been hard work since I started this project, but I ensure that all sports get equitable coverage for all the hard work and effort the athletes put in. Recently, on top of graphics, I've been including video to be more on brand with the broadcast journalism program. Sometimes those are quick clips that I get, and sometimes they're clips from livestreams we put on. Still, the graphics combined with the video make our sports recaps uniquely my own (also view Design to see how I craft my graphics).
Honoring our athletes and all of the contributions that they've given, not only to Grandview High School but also to our media programs, meant a lot to me. These athletes have given and continue to give journalists like myself something to report on. I wanted to be able to give back to them by honoring each and every athlete's contributions to our community, especially student journalists. The process below was repeated 25 times for each athlete who signed for Signing Day. It was a project that took over 10 hours and cost me about $50, but it was completely worth it to give back to our athletes. I wanted to take a play on lens signings for signing day by buying glass to put over the lens and simulate that feeling.
When my AP European History teacher came to me complaining about how live score updates were hard to find, I wanted to do something about it. I took up my camera, bought myself an SD Card reader for my phone, and left his class early to get to the softball fields in time. I started posting the photos I took on Instagram as scores/updates came in. This continued as part of Grandview's inaugural Sports Information Department, covering everything from hockey to basketball, to football, to softball, to lacrosse.
Because our audience doesn't check our YouTube page every day, we needed to find new ways to promote our content. Going to social media was the easy answer. We wanted to hook our viewers with a short clip from the video and the thumbnail to make it as easy as possible to find the video when they go to our page. For livestreams, putting up the thumbnail is often enough, but we try to elevate by creating storylines with the caption.
Our goal is to bring the action right to our viewer's phones. Simple videos that I can get on my phone to showcase the action as best as I can. While it isn't as developed as our Instagram stories, video is a unique part that brings the up-close action right to our viewer's phones.
We certainly haven't unlocked our full potential with TikTok, it's a unique platform where we can try a lot of different things. The main way we use our platform is to connect with our audience about new videos we've uploaded on our main YouTube page with teasers. We've also tried to keep our audience engaged in odd ways, including getting on TikTok Trends to put multiple videos on top of each other.
I will continue to promote storylines through the descriptions of our livestream. I schedule all of our livestreams so that people can see what's upcoming.
Coming up with catchy and engaging titles as well as accurate descriptions is one way that I help contribute to web. I also want to highlight the amazing creators of our videos, which is why I include their names in the description of the videos.
