ヘリウム液化室紹介

　本学では、超伝導量子干渉計(SQUID)、核磁気共鳴装置(NMR)、超伝導マグネット(SCM)、電子スピン共鳴装置(ESR)等、液体ヘリウムを必要とする装置が多数導入されており、教育、研究用寒剤として大量の液体ヘリウムの使用があります。このような学内の需要に対応し、高価な液体ヘリウムを効率よく、低いコストで、安定して供給するために、ナノマテリアルテクノロジーセンター工作棟内にヘリウム液化室が設置されています。

　ヘリウム液化装置は、極力人手がかからず効率的に液体ヘリウム供給を確保できるように設計されています。すなわち、回収ヘリウムガスを高純度に保つヘリウムガス精製装置を有し、液化機の能力を十分に引き出すためのバランスのとれた貯蔵能力を持つヘリウム回収装置を備えています。また、液化機本体、ヘリウム回収装置の各部は自動化され、一連の液化、回収作業を基本的に全自動で行うことが可能となるように十分に配慮されたシステムになっています。

　なお、液体ヘリウムを利用する全ての実験室にヘリウムガス回収配管が設置され、実験で使用され蒸発したヘリウムガスは全て自動的にヘリウム液化室へ戻る体制が整えられています。

　また、ヘリウム液化装置は、ヘリウム液化機、ヘリウム回収装置、液体窒素貯槽から構成され、特徴及び主な内訳は以下のとおりです。

1. ヘリウム液化機
   　システムの中心となる装置であり、全自動運転によるヘリウムガスの液化が可能です。液体窒素による原料ガスの予備冷却機構を有し、また不純ヘリウムガスのための内部精製機を内蔵しています。

2. ヘリウム回収装置
   　回収ガスを高純度(99.9%以上)に保つためにガス分離膜式の精製装置を有し、一連の回収作業が全自動化されています。ヘリウムガスの液化の際、液化機の能力に見合うような十分なガスマニホールドを有しています。

3. 液体窒素貯槽
   　液化ガスを予備的に冷却するための液体窒素を、ヘリウム液化機に供給するための貯槽です。これによって 80 リットル/時のヘリウムガスの液化が可能となります。

Introduction to the Helium Liquefaction Room

　A large amount of liquid helium is used as an agar agent for education and research at Tohoku University, where many devices that require liquid helium are installed, such as superconducting quantum interferometer (SQUID), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), superconducting magnet (SCM), and electron spin resonance (ESR). The Helium Liquefaction Room is located in the Engineering Building of the Center for Nano Materials and Technology (CMT) to meet this demand and to provide a stable supply of expensive liquid helium efficiently and at low cost.

　The helium liquefaction system is designed to ensure an efficient supply of liquid helium with as little manpower as possible. In other words, it has a helium gas purification system to keep the recovered helium gas highly pure, and a helium recovery system with a balanced storage capacity to fully exploit the capacity of the liquefier. Each part of the liquefier and the helium recovery unit is automated, and the system is designed to enable a series of liquefaction and recovery operations to be basically fully automated.

　All experimental rooms that use liquid helium are equipped with helium gas recovery pipes, and all evaporated helium gas used in experiments is automatically returned to the helium liquefaction chamber.

　The helium liquefaction system consists of a helium liquefier, a helium recovery system, and a liquid nitrogen storage tank, and the features and main breakdown are as follows.

1. Helium liquefiers
   　It is the core of the system and is capable of liquefying helium gas by fully automatic operation. It has a pre-cooling mechanism for the raw gas using liquid nitrogen, and an internal purifier for impure helium gas.

2. Helium recovery system
   　In order to maintain high purity (Over 99.9) of the recovered gas, the system has a gas separation membrane type purification system and a series of recovery operations are fully automated. When liquefying helium gas, the system has a sufficient gas manifold to match the capacity of the liquefier.

3. liquid nitrogen storage tank
   　This storage tank is used to supply liquid nitrogen to the helium liquefier for preliminary cooling of the liquefied gas. This enables the liquefaction of 80 liters/hr of helium gas.
