ARTICLE IV
The membership of the organization shall consist of those endorsing the objectives of the Association, and shall be of five types:
Ordinary members.
Honorary members.
Supporting members.
Special supporting members.
Adjunct members.
ARTICLE V
Ordinary members shall be those individuals with at least a four year college education, or equivalent academic ability, who are actively engaged in academic pursuits. Such individuals shall be nominated by an officer of this organization, as defined in Article VII, and approved by the Board of Directors.
Honorary members shall be selected by the Board of Directors from among Japanese and non-Japanese scholars who have made a remarkable contribution to Indian or Buddhist studies, and from among members of the organization who have significantly contributed to the activities or operations of the organization.
Supporting members shall be academic organizations involved in regularly supporting the activities or operations of this organization. They shall be selected by the Board of Directors, based on the said organization's self-nomination or on a nomination by the Board of Directors of this organization.
Special supporting members shall be organizations or individuals who support the aims of this organization, offering it financial support in good faith. They shall be selected by the Board of Directors.
Adjunct members shall be organizations or individuals who wish to subscribe to the organization's official journal. They shall be selected by the Board of Directors, based by their own application.
Regulations governing the membership dues and rules of resignation from the organization shall be stipulated elsewhere.
ARTICLE VI
All members may participate in the activities specified in Article III, and are eligible to receive the organization's publications. Ordinary and honorary members are also eligible to make presentation of their research at the ortanization's Annual Conference and research conferences, and to publish their research in the organization's official journal. Specific regulations concerning research presentations and publications shall be stipulated elsewhere.
Rules regarding Presentations
Qualified persons for presentations at the conference shall be those members who have completed a master's course (under the new system) at a graduate school.
Bylaws regarding Membership Fees
Anual membership fees are as follows:
① Regular Members JPY 6,500
② Honorary Members Exempted from paying membership fees
③ Supporting Members Equivalent to the amount paid in past years
④ Special Supporting Members JPY 50,000 or above
⑤ Adjunct Members JPY 6,500
These regulations are subject to charge by resolution of the Board of the Directors.
These bylaws have been put into effect May 22nd, the 5th year of Heisei (1993).
Bylaws regarding Withdrawal from the Organization
(1) Those who wish to withdraw from the Society may do so after submitting a written notice to the Society's head office and receiving approval from the Board of Directors.
(2) Any person who has failed to pay the membership fee for three years shall be disqualified from membership.
(3) A person who is deemed to be inappropriate as a member, for example, by seriously damaging the honor of the association, may be expelled from membership by a decision of the Board of Directors.
(4) In any of the cases described in (1), (2), and (3) above, the member shall be obliged to pay the unpaid membership fee.
(5) Any changes to these Bylaws shall be subject to the decision of the Board of Directors.

These internal rules were implemented on September 11, 1979, and revised and enforced on May 22, 1993.
