The JAIBS Prize

History of the JAIBS Prize

The Japanese Association of Indian and Buddhist Studies (JAIBS) Prize was established by a donation from the first Chairperson, Professor Miyamoto Shōson of the University of Tokyo. It was established at the academic conference held at Taisho University in 1954, as one of the fifth anniversary projects of the JAIBS. The Board of Directors accepted the donation at the 8th Annual Conference held at Koyasan University in 1957, at which time the project was launched. The background for this is as follows. Chairperson Miyamoto compiled the results of his research on the “Historical Forms of Fundamental Truth in Buddhism” (funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) and published them in his book The Fundamental Truth of Buddhism (仏教の根本真理) to commemorate the 2,500th anniversary of the Buddha’s death. Fortunately, this book was well-received and has gone through many editions, and we were able to establish the JAIBS’s prize with the royalties from the book. Initially, 50,000 yen was set aside annually for five years until the 10th anniversary of the JAIBS. Since then, the JAIBS has funded the Prize as an award to honor young researchers, and this has continued to the present day.
