Beware is a junior year project made while I was abroad in Montreal. It was the longest project I had worked on at the time, being a 15 week endeavor. For this game, I mainly worked on narrative, which we decided would mostly be told through the environment. Other instances of narrative would be found in newspaper articles.
I first planned out a list of potential art assets that could fit into the level. Since it took place in an abandoned national park, I stuck to things that could be found there. I also made sure to showcase signs that a bear had taken over, and that there was some sort of effort made to remove the bear. Each one is labeled based on how each one showcases something about the narrative.
The newspapers show up in a few places during the game. One of them shows up when the game loads, one shows up when the player completes the game having photographed all three features, and the final one shows up when the player completes the game without photographing all three features. They are meant to showcase how the player is influencing the world, andd why they are trying to in the first place.
The environment also features posters that not only serve as narrative elements, some of them also deliver valuable information to the player. One poster is used to tell the player they can hide in bushes to avoid the bear, one lets the player know their camera will draw attention to themselves, and one lets the player know they cannot clime fences or rocks.
